The City of Sundance is ready to unveil the latest addition to local recreation: Sundance Square, a new park next door to Old Stoney. Complete with splash pad, stage and concession stand, the location is intended as both a place for locals and visitors to hang out and a location for events such as farmers’ markets and concerts. The grand opening of Sundance Square Park will take place the day after Old Stoney itself is officially revealed to the public. While the museum has been open for a few w...

  • Fire season continues to sizzle

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 17, 2021

Another week of dry heat with the occasional flash of lightning has brought another week of fires throughout Crook County. Fortunately, says Fire Warden Doug Leis, so far they’ve mostly been relatively small. “We did have a little rash of fires throughout the week,” says Leis. “Most of them were smaller fires, just lightning strike little things.” The largest fire of the week appears to have been caused by a downed power line. According to Moorcroft Fire Chief Rusty Williams, the live line was...

  • County declared disaster area

    Jun 17, 2021

Crook County has been designated a primary natural disaster area by the U.S. Department of Agriculture due to the ongoing drought conditions in this area. Along with those in 20 other counties in Wyoming, producers in this area are now eligible for emergency credit to assist in recovering from the disaster. The county was automatically found to be eligible for this status because it was recorded by the U.S. Drought Monitor as having suffered from severe drought for eight or more consecutive weeks during the growing season. Farm Service Agency...

  • Primary disagreements

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 17, 2021

On hearing that it would be impossible to introduce run-off elections in time for the 2022 elections, the Joint Corporations, Elections & Political Subdivisions Committee has opted to not move ahead with legislation to do so. However, ranked choice or open primaries are still on the table for now. After hearing two hours of testimony from the Secretary of State’s Office and Wyoming’s county clerks at its meeting last week, the committee realized the time window is too narrow for all the necessary steps, says Senator Ogden Driskill, co-...

  • Peek at the Past

    Jun 17, 2021

1 Years Ago June 16, 1921 One of the most interesting meetings of the season was held at the oil derrick on Hawken dome Sunday. Rev. N.E. Wood preached an excellent sermon to a large audience of people assembled from all points of the compass. Preceding the sermon an old fashioned picnic dinner was enjoyed, which included all the delicacies of the season prepared as only the housewives of this favored section know how to tempt the appetite. Quite a delegation went over to Hulett Sunday and...

  • Time for treasure hunting

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 17, 2021

More than 50 individual yard sales will be taking place over two days this weekend as the Country Junkin’ Weekend returns for its third year. Garage and yard sales have always punctuated the summer in this part of the world, but local chambers of commerce teamed up in 2019 to introduce an idea that would turn an opportunity for treasure-hunting into a countywide event complete with the opportunity for a road trip adventure across the area. From food to glassware, antiques to yard tools, individual vendors will be offering their wares in l...

  • LTC temporarily closes to visitation

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 17, 2021

The long term care unit at Sundance Memorial Hospital has temporarily closed to all visitation. The lockdown is expected to come to an end within approximately a week. Though there has been a small uptick in cases over the last few weeks, CEO Micki Lyons explains that the decision is not related to the overall pandemic situation. It is a mandatory closure due to a case occurring within the nursing home itself. “We had one LTC employee test positive for covid which requires us to shut down to visitors for a minimum of two weeks,” she says. The... Full story

  • White-nose syndrome detected in bats at Devils Tower National Monument

    Jun 17, 2021

Wildlife researchers have confirmed the presence of white-nose syndrome (WNS) in bats at Devils Tower National Monument. While this is the first confirmation of WNS in the state, the fungus that causes WNS, Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), was potentially detected in southeast Wyoming as early as 2018. Biologists from the University of Wyoming discovered evidence of WNS during surveys completed in early May 2021, when they captured and sampled bats to test for the fungus. The work was in collaboration with the Wyoming Game and Fish...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jun 17, 2021

Dear Editor, “Life is essential health care” proclaims the unsigned anti-abortion ad that has been appearing each week in The Sundance Times. Of course, the opposite is true: health care is essential to life. I passionately hope that the unnamed person or persons who are purchasing this advertisement each week are also committed to supporting the lifelong health and wellbeing of our nation’s children. It would be utterly hypocritical to prove our “pro-life” commitment by disallowing abortion but fail to extend the commitment to helping n...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 17, 2021

If I had to name an equivalent to Old Stoney from back in my homeland, my mind would instantly go to Battersea Power Station. I’ve spent a lifetime waiting for someone to breathe new life into the iconic London landmark, and finally my patience has been rewarded. Looming over the River Thames along my daily commute to work, the station is one of the biggest brick buildings in the world and once consumed over a million tons of coal each year to provide a fifth of London’s electricity. Unf...
