  • Courthouse basement to get major overhaul

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 4, 2023

When the majority of the basement level of the courthouse was taken up by historical artifacts, it wasn't obvious to the beholder just how much space there is available. Now the museum has taken up its new home in Old Stoney and those 10,000 square feet lie empty, it's time for a new lease of life for the county's seat of government. Eventually, the basement floor will allow for more spacious offices and additional storage, as well as an additional – but smaller – community room to provide a m...

  • Fueling the fire department

    May 4, 2023

Hungry locals flocked to the shooting sports building on Saturday evening to support the Sundance Volunteer Fire Department. The annual chili feed attracted a crowd to enjoy a meal, live auction, card raffle and a kids-only silent auction. Now in its third year, the chili feed is one of the department's biggest fundraisers of the year. Saturday's event drew an estimated 184 attendees and raised around $18,000....

  • Active shooter training set for next week

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 4, 2023

If you pass by the school campus on Wednesday, or see more emergency vehicles than usual on the streets of Sundance, don’t worry. It’s all part of the large-scale active shooter training scenario that will be taking place both on and off campus. “You’re going to see things that are not normal,” warns Emergency Management Coordinator Ed Robinson. This might include, for example, a helicopter, people wearing bright vests, students leaving the building en masse and “injured” victims being transported to the hospital. It’s nothing to worry about,...

  • BLM to host first official meeting for management plan update

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 4, 2023

The process to update the resource management plan (RMP) that governs Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land in Crook County has officially begun. The scoping period will begin with a series of public meetings, including one at the courthouse in Sundance on May 15 at 4 p.m. The document defines how the BLM approaches management of everything from livestock grazing and fire management to air quality and minerals on the lands it governs within northeast Wyoming and covers the tri-county region of Crook, Weston and Niobrara counties. The RMP for...

  • Felony charge dropped in bicycle case

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 4, 2023

A felony aggravated assault charge against Patrick Michael King, related to an incident involving an alleged altercation with a bicyclist, has been dropped. King was found guilty of a lesser charge of property destruction. The changes to King’s charges are the result of a plea agreement in which the state agreed to dismiss the felony charge and, in exchange, King pled guilty to the misdemeanor. On February 11, a Crook County Sheriff’s Office deputy was dispatched to Beulah for an incident involving a bicyclist and a four wheeler. As the dep...

  • Peek at the Past

    May 4, 2023

1 Years Ago May 10, 1923 Armed mainly with doubtful gift of mesmerism, Shorty Starr, abbreviated from Herr Starizinich of Poland, struck Sundance last week en route to Hollywood to try the movie game. Local authorities considered the stumpy artist somewhat of a nuisance, and he hiked on toward the setting sun. The annual city election Tuesday caused more interest than has been the case for some time, there being 139 votes cast. The Citizens ticket won throughout, endorsing the past administration and higth school management in general. The...

  • Letter to the Editor

    May 4, 2023

Hypocrisy – or is it? According to Webster’s, hypocrisy is defined as behavior that contradicts what one claims to believe. On April 27 it was revealed that the President of the Wyoming Senate unilaterally removed the chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. The President reasoned that because this chairman attended a meeting virtually, he didn’t care enough about his leadership role and deserved to lose it. This move might lead one to infer that the Senate President deeply values perfect legislative attendance, being present and ready...

You’ll be there to consider programs for the upcoming Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, May 20 and May 29. It’s our job as vets to remind the people of Sundance, of those who are not with us, so someday when we aren’t here, WE will be remembered. Brett, who’s in charge of Boys State in Wyoming, sent me an application from a youn...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|May 4, 2023

When you think of ultra-expensive properties, the skyscrapers of Dubai or the sprawling modern palaces of Malibu are what probably spring to mind. You would be incorrect in thinking these are the most spendy housing options in the world. The most expensive home on the entire planet just sold to a new owner and it’s located on a little spit of land jutting out from my home town of Poole. I know, I was surprised too. North Haven Point is on Sandbanks, on a road that’s known as “Mi...
