100 Years Ago

May 10, 1923

Armed mainly with doubtful gift of mesmerism, Shorty Starr, abbreviated from Herr Starizinich of Poland, struck Sundance last week en route to Hollywood to try the movie game. Local authorities considered the stumpy artist somewhat of a nuisance, and he hiked on toward the setting sun.

The annual city election Tuesday caused more interest than has been the case for some time, there being 139 votes cast. The Citizens ticket won throughout, endorsing the past administration and higth school management in general. The final result follows: Mayor, Edwin Rounds 110, Fred Schloredt 27; councilmen, J.T. Farrell 94, W.D. Roadifer 45, R.R. Portlow 107, unopposed.

May 6, 1948

The Kara Mountain community recently enjoyed a community dinner, which was prepared by the men of the community and served at the Mrs. J.V. Clark home. The women said that the food was every bit as good as if they had prepared it themselves. In the culinary department for the day were Bing Nussbaum, Tommy Ryan, Gunnard Necklason, Reuben Necklason, Frederick Clark, David Fraser and Virgil Schlup.

The management of York’s Golden Rule, Belle Fourche announced this week in an advertisement that sometime in June they will open a completely modern department store in the Fawkes building, Sundance as a branch of their Belle Fourche store. Men started working this week on the remodeling of the building, which has housed the Tri-County Electric Association offices since its opening.

A fitting memorial to Wyoming’s veterans, the War Memorial Fieldhouse will commemorate within its walls every man and woman serving in World War II. The fieldhouse, with a seating capacity of 12,000 will be dedicated to service for the people of Wyoming no matter how near or how far they are from the University campus.

May 3, 1973

Bids for the dirt moving at the site of the new Sundance elementary school and for the purchase of six new school buses were accepted during a special meeting of the Crook County School District No. One board. After discussing dirt moving bids and negotiations with Big Horn Construction Co. and Robert McAmis, the board accepted Big Horn Construction’s bid.

The Sundance TV Association, meeting Thursday night in the wake of vandalism which caused heavy damage to the association’s equipment on Sundance Mountain, agreed to ask members for a minimum $10 dues assessment to cover the cost of repairs. Secretary-Treasurer Noel Edwards said Jack Starr, Gillette, will be in Sundance Saturday to check the damage and start work on repairs.

May 7, 1998

Tuesday was election day for the town of Hulett. Initial, uncertified results show that Mayor Winnie Bush received 76 votes in her unopposed re-election bid. Joe Jenk received 107 votes to be elected to the unexpired two-year term on the town council. There were two contested positions of the town council, with three people vying for two council seats. Mary Flanderka received 87 votes, Phyllis Proctor received 81 and Rick Pouwee received 53.
