  • Election: county supports funding measures

    Sarah Pridgeon|Nov 5, 2020

Election night’s unofficial results saw voters strongly support the county’s senior service district with a continuation of the one mill levy it uses to fund the programs offered to senior citizens. By a narrower margin, voters approved a new iteration of the Specific Sales and Use Tax, which has been used by every municipality and the county over the last 16 years to address infrastructure needs such as roads, sewer and water, projects for which it’s often difficult to find other sources of fu...

  • Courthouse threat thwarted

    Sarah Pridgeon|Nov 5, 2020

A local man was arrested on Thursday before he could carry out a plan to shoot an employee within the Crook County Courthouse. Sheriff’s Office deputies apprehended county resident John Roscoe at his home thanks to a warning call from a member of the public. The call came in at around 3:40 p.m. on October 29 that Roscoe was “upset and had a gun”, according to incident reports from the Sheriff’s Office. Before long, law enforcement had reason to believe Roscoe was targeting a specific person within the courthouse. The incident report states...

With cases rising so quickly, Crook County has reactivated its emergency operations center. “The incident management team decided that, due to the increase in Covid-19 activity, reactivating the EOC was necessary so that important issues could be addressed and confronted on a more timely and consistent basis,” said a press release from the emergency operations center. “The incident manageme...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Nov 5, 2020

Politics across the pond has never had the glitz and glamor of America’s election season. The differences between our political systems have created a situation in which you guys have rallies, ticker tape and superstars and Britain has…well, not much reason for a party. Unfortunately, it’s seemed in recent years as though our politicians have been wondering how to capture the magic for themselves. If nothing else, this has answered the question of what happens when you take a bunch of fusty old...

  • Virus immunity unlikely to be permanent

    Sarah Pridgeon|Nov 5, 2020

Both worldwide and locally, evidence is mounting that it’s possible to contract COVID-19 more than once, putting a serious damper on hopes that herd immunity could one day bring an end to the pandemic. As with other types of coronavirus, it appears that a person’s immunity will only last so long. The Laramie Boomerang reported on Thursday that an Albany County resident had tested positive for the second time, around six months after first testing positive in March. Amy Surdam, chief operating officer for Stitches Acute Care Center, told the...

Connie Lindmier of the Crook County Medical Services District Board of Trustees last week encouraged members of the community to consider donating. The contract to build the new clinic was awarded in September to RCS of Rapid City for a total of $2.54 million. This, said Judy Hutchinson of the Crook County Hospital Foundation, was “less than what we had planned on in o...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Nov 5, 2020

Powder River Energy (PRECorp) has requested permission from the Public Service Commission to increase its Cost of Power Adjustment (COPA) by $3876 per annum, effective on January 1, to reflect a change in wholesale power costs. This would lead to a modest reduction on residential monthly bills. In a second filing, the cooperative has also asked to adjust the amount it pays members who generate small amounts of electricity themselves. COPA is a mechanism that the cooperative uses to ensure it is only ever recovering from its members the cost of...

  • Landowners express interest in Carlile water district

    Sarah Pridgeon|Nov 5, 2020

There appears to be some initial local interest in the idea of forming a water district for the Carlile area, said Jaime Tarver on Monday. Representing DOWL, the company that performed a year-long study into water issues in that part of the county, Tarver gave her final report and discussed the reactions of the public at a meeting on October 20 during which local residents were informed of study’s results. That meeting saw 15 people in attendance, she said, representing around 12 landowners. A questionnaire was handed out to gauge interest i...

  • Patriots open playoffs with win over Lovell, move on to face Lyman

    Rebecca Maupin|Nov 5, 2020

On a clear but windy night, the #2 seed US Patriots took on the #3 seed from the west, the Lovell Bulldogs, in the opening round of playoffs. As play began, both teams knew having the wind at their back might prove to be the most important part of the game and it was the Patriots who kicked off with wind to start. Taking to the field, the stiff Patriot defense made the opening drive for the Lovell Bulldogs difficult. Looking at a fourth down, the Bulldogs faked the punt in hopes of a first...

1 Years Ago Nov. 4, 1920 Commencing with a landslide in Ohio and continuing over the entire country, Senator Harding was elected president of the United States Tuesday by one of the most decisive votes in the history of American Politics. A suggestion has been made which seems entirely feasible, that there be a county library established in Crook County, with the view of combining the office of superintendent of schools with that of county librarian. The law provides for one-fourth mill levy for library purposes, and this amount would be...
