  • Watch for lowball property offers

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 27, 2023

If you own vacant property in Crook County, you may have received a letter from a real estate company offering to purchase it from you. County Assessor Dan Thomas shares a key piece of information about these letters: the price at which they offer to purchase your land is not based on information provided by his office. This is important for property owners to know because the price you are offered may be significantly lower than what your property would be appraised for. “Mailing addresses are public information,” he explains. “On our websi...

  • Up in lights

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 27, 2023

Improvements to the county fairgrounds continue this year with two significant projects: a complete replacement of all lighting and an all-new show/sale ring. "We're doing a lighting enhancement project. It's all-new LED lights, exterior and interior in every building," says Facilities Maintenance Supervisor Larry Schommer of the first project. "All the incandescent, fluorescent lights are getting replaced." The project is funded through a Wyoming Department of Energy grant. The 'WyLight' grant...

  • A different kind of storm

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 27, 2023

After a winter that brought seemingly endless blizzards, we'd be forgiven for feeling glum at news of yet another squall. Sunday, however, brought a different kind of storm to the northern portion of the United States – a much more beautiful one. In this area, columns of light pulsed and danced as the day dwindled towards midnight, moving upwards towards a vast swirl overhead. The colors may have been less vivid than for skywatchers further north, but the aurora borealis was very much visible t...

  • Season changes approved - with one exception

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 27, 2023

Alterations to this year’s hunting seasons have now been approved by the Wyoming Game & Fish Commission, but with one important change to what was proposed. The general deer season will still be shortened, but a little less than expected. “Our rifle season, after the commission met, is going to be November 1 through November 17, so we still cut the weekend out but with an extra few days of wiggle room to play with,” says Sundance Game Warden Nate Holst. The commission met last week to consider the adjustments, which were proposed mainly in re...

  • Card of Thanks

    Apr 27, 2023

Thank You A huge thank you to the Crook County Medical Services and EMS. On the night of March 31, I was brought into the ER by my most amazing wife, with severe chest pain and headache, not caused by her. I firmly believe that I am here today because of the knowledge, professionalism, attention to detail, expediency and concern for patient care. The initial critical care received at CCMSD EMS was crucial to the recovery that we can now enjoy. The EMS crew actually came to the ER to assist staff. It appeared to me that they had worked together...

Veteran’s needing transportation to a VA appointment will now have a new option in Crook County. The DAV has provided a van to be used for area veterans. Although based in Sundance, it is hoped it will be available to serve veterans from across the county. The new service is available to take veterans to any VA scheduled appointment they may have and is not limited to the Ft. Meade facility. There is currently one volunteer driver for the service in Sundance but the organization would like to grow that number to 4-6 drivers in order to p...

  • Department of Health: don't let rabies sneak up on you

    Apr 27, 2023

Seasonal animal activity is prompting the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) to issue a warning regarding the ongoing threat posed by rabies, a deadly but preventable disease. Any mammal, including humans, can get rabies; in Wyoming, bats and skunks are the primary sources and can spread rabies to people and pets by bites or scratches. Dr. Emily Curren, state public health veterinarian with WDH, said there have been three confirmed rabies cases so far this year in Sheridan County skunks. Last year, there were 14 confirmed cases of animal...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Apr 27, 2023

Dear Editor, We won’t know the true scope of wildlife losses till the winter’s snow retreats. I am happy to see the Governor, wildlife biologists and sportsmen’s groups are already working to restore wildlife populations devastated by the perfect storm of a severe winter following years of extreme drought. As you can imagine, the winterkill animals have been a windfall for predators and their numbers are still strong. In the next couple of months, baby lambs, calves, deer and antelope fawns and elk calves will become the main source of food...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Apr 27, 2023

It turns out there is a limit to my parents’ patriotism. You could draft them for national service, you can tax them for the good of the republic, but a line must be drawn at fava beans. In fact, I’m not even going to share with you the kind of language that came out of my mother when I informed her that she’s going to have to eat some. The official dish of the Coronation of King Charles III has been announced and it contains – you guessed it – fava beans, along with tarragon and spinach....
