Martin R. Peterson

Martin R. Peterson, 85 of Sundance, Wyoming, passed away on April 22, 2023 in Gillette, Wyoming.

Martin was born on April 12, 1937, 45 minutes after twin sister Mathilda at the Peterson ranch home in Weston County, Wyoming. His parents were Leonard and Harriett (Waters) Peterson.

His elementary education was in county schools in the area. His freshman year of high school in Newcastle and completed high school at Sundance High School in 1955.

He was a rancher his entire life, with his brother for about 20 years and then on his own until he retired.

He spent a brief stint in the US Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. His unit was within hours of being shipped to Cuba for the "Bay of Pigs" incident.

Martin married Karen Vercellino in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, in May 1966. They have lived in Sundance since that time.

He was the father of twins Tharon and Thad and then John two years later. His grandchildren are Karnie and Kyan Peterson in Holbrook, Arizona. All are surviving except Tharon.

Martin is survived by twin sister, Mathilda and sister, Carol Heupel; brother, Richard Peterson and many cousins, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, George, Robert, Donald and Carl "Bull" and son, Tharon.

Martin was a member of the Sundance United Methodist church, 50-year member of Sundance Lodge No 9, AF&AM, Electa Chapter No.5 OES in Sundance, a 32° member of Kalif Shrine Temple and Inyan Kara Shrine Club in Sheridan

He was a retired member of the Volunteer Fire Department of Sundance.

Services are set for May 2, 2023 at the Sundance United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Green Mountain Cemetery in Weston County, Wyoming
