  • Full summer ahead for Cook Lake

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 30, 2022

Landslide dangers and necessary construction have hindered use of Cook Lake Recreation Area in recent seasons – but not this year. According to Mike Gosse, District Ranger, the popular site will be offering a full set of amenities over the coming weeks of summer. “Cook Lake, Reuter, Bearlodge and Sundance Horse Camp are all open for camping with a full season of use expected. • Drought declared over

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 30, 2022

The rain might have interrupted a few early-summer barbecues around the area, and many a vehicle and siding panel could have done without the hail, but Crook County has officially been raised out of drought conditions thanks to all the recent precipitation. While the lower half of the county does remain “abnormally dry”, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, the northern half is experiencing no drought conditions at all at this time. This is quite the turnaround from just three months ago, when the entire county was listed as experiencing ong...

  • Passing the book

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 30, 2022

You don't need to be quiet in the library. You're allowed to talk, and laugh, and enjoy yourself. The cliché of the stern librarian with a finger to her lips, hair pulled back in a bun and a cross look as she shushes you, is one that Jill Mackey and Bonnie Stahla have always wanted to dispel. "We've worked hard, especially with the kids, to make sure they know they're welcome at the library and they know what the library provides," says Mackey, who steps down at the end of the month as director...

  • CCMSD financials given clean bill of health

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 30, 2022

Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD) was given a relatively clean audit report last week, courtesy of Scott Nelson of Eide Bailly of Montana. Only two issues were noted in the report, neither of which came as a surprise. Both, said Nelson, are common issues for smaller medical organizations. The first was a concern that has been noted over the years for almost every governing body receiving an audit in the county: lack of complete segregation of duties. This occurs when an entity lacks the employees to be able to assign a different pe...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 30, 2022

The scientists of my alma mater solved a bird-based mystery last week, but the solution was not nearly as bizarre as it first seemed. The head-scratcher involved an oystercatcher that seemed to be the best-traveled creature in the UK, making its way through an impressive swathe of the islands’ most popular attractions. Animal tracking is no novel phenomenon here in Wyoming – our Game and Fish department uses this method constantly to keep an eye on the wildlife of our state. Researchers fro...

  • Pandemic still active in county

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jun 30, 2022

The COVID-19 pandemic may have been on the down-low over the last few months, but it certainly isn’t gone. According to CEO Micki Lyons of the Crook County Medical Services District, the virus is still cropping up in the local community. “We’ve seen some positive employees and also some positive in the community,” she told the board of trustees at last week’s regular meeting. However, Lyons noted last week that this doesn’t seem to be having an impact on the community level system used by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to indicate th...
