  • City looks south for garbage fix

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 24, 2022

When Crook County's five entities came together in 2018 to tackle the ongoing garbage problem, one of the options thrown into the mix was to team up with Weston County and make use of its already-approved solid waste district. It was received as a potential win-win even then, but Weston County Solid Waste District (WCSWD) had only just begun the process of finding acreage for its landfill, let alone building it. Four years and numerous attempts to find an answer later, and with Sundance resident...

  • Poll position

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 24, 2022

The county intends to return to normal practice for this year’s elections, with polling locations back where they can usually be found. Several were moved during the 2020 elections due to the need for social distancing and a state-directed limit on the number of polling stations that could be open per county. However, with the lifting of Wyoming’s emergency declaration, rearranging polling stations is not considered a necessary step for 2022. A total of six polling locations were moved in 2020, some to the basement of the courthouse in Sun...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 24, 2022

What if Cinderella’s stepsisters were nice people after all? Join the students of Sundance High School for a musical comedy next weekend to find out just how wrong the Brothers Grimm got their story. Stepsisters is a retelling of the famous Cinderella fairytale from the perspective of Drew and Beth, who start the story having been thrown in the dungeon for conspiring against the throne. But are they really wicked and evil? What if they were just trying to help the tongue-tied prince talk to t...

  • More legislation signed into law

    Sarah Pridgeon|Mar 24, 2022

The work was not quite complete when the 2022 Wyoming Legislative Session came to an end on March 11. Much of the work completed in the House and Senate still needed the final signature of Governor Mark Gordon. New laws that have since been signed into law include HB-146, local government distributions, through which cities such as Sundance receive their regular state funding, which for this biennium has been finalized at $105 million. This, according to Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz, is at the same level as the 2020 biennium and the city will...

    Mar 24, 2022

1 Years Ago Mar. 23, 1922 At the regular meeting of the Commercial club Tuesday evening, Chairman Isley of the schools committee presented plans for a modern high school building, with outlined suggestions for various changes in the arrangement of rooms. After discussion it was voted that the documents be referred to the board of the high school district. From these plans and estimates it appears that a suitable modern building can be erected for about $40,000. A girl of regulation weight was...

  • Devils Tower National Monument transitioning to cashless fee collection

    Mar 24, 2022

Beginning April 1, 2022, Devils Tower National Monument will be accepting entrance fee payments via card and digital payments only. Reduce the amount of time park staff spend managing cash (i.e. reduce our administrative burden); 2. Increase the amount of fee revenue available to support critical projects and visitor services; 3. Improve accountability and reduce opportunities for improprieties. C...

SF-66 is the guidance that the City of Sundance – among many other cities, counties and organizations – has been waiting for. It appropriates specific amounts of money from Wyoming’s ARPA funds to various agencies and programs. Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz says that Sundance will be ready, having been working on a list...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Mar 24, 2022

Not every journey ends where it means to, but, as the wise often say, it’s not the destination that matters. Such was the case for Ernest Shackleton, whose ship has been located after more than a hundred years sitting on the bottom of the Weddell Sea. You may have seen the news that a multinational team of scientists has finally found the HMS Endurance, one of the most famous (until now) lost shipwrecks of all time. Its ice-crushed carcass has languished 10,000 feet below the surface for over a century, and there it shall forever remain. As a...
