  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 22, 2019

It’s delightful to discover a home-town hero, especially one who not only stands up for the little guy, but adds beauty to the world while he’s doing it. I came across such a pillar of the community quite by accident, thanks to a sculpture in Chicago that looks like a giant jellybean. The statue – which is called Cloud Gate, though the locals are too savvy to refer to it as anything but The Bean – was designed by a hoity-toity British artist by the name of Sir Anish Mikhail Kapoor. Unless...

  • Parents address suicide policy

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 22, 2019

Supported by a group of community members, Jess and Doug Donnell addressed the school board on Monday evening to encourage more communication about the issue of teen suicide and a rethink on the district’s new policy regarding suicide prevention. The Donnells, who lost their son, Josh, to suicide earlier this summer, feel the policy is discriminatory against children with mental health issues. Specifically, the couple takes issue with statements included in the policy that “students who experience serious depression are unable to benefit ful...

From tragedy, hope can often spring. The story of one young girl has impacted the lives of millions of students across America since she lost her life 20 years ago as the first person killed in the Columbine High School shooting, and her legacy of positive change will be coming to Crook County next week. “The school district is bringing Rachel’s Challenge to every building and each attendance center,” says Superintendent Mark Broderson. “I would like to make sure the communities are well aware of the opportunity to attend the seminar...

  • Commissioners fix Fair funding clerical mistake

    Sarah Pridgeon|Aug 22, 2019

The County Commissioners met in special meeting last week to fix a clerical mistake that left the Crook County Fair Board budget short by almost $78,000. The issue was caused by misunderstandings during the changeover to a new style of budget, says County Clerk Linda Fritz, and she stresses that it involved no mishandling of money. “The fair board has not been careless in their money, they have not over-spent their money, it was simply a clerical error of money that was never there to begin with,” she stresses. “It was an error in the budge...

  • Back in the swing

    Aug 22, 2019

The playgrounds of Crook County are once again filled with laughter and young voices as the 2019 school year gets underway. The school year started early this year, according to Superintendent Mark Broderson, because almost every holiday falls in the middle of the week – both Christmas and New Year are on a Wednesday and “you can’t have school on Monday and not the rest of the week”. He assures parents that, next year, the schedule will again commence on the third week of August....
