Tough week for basketball

SHS Girls

The Sundance Lady Bulldogs had their week of competitions cut short this week due to weather. As the blowing snow and bitter cold set in, the games against Hill City and Burns, in Lusk, were canceled.

There was, however, a slight break in the weather and the team was able to travel down the road to face the Moorcroft Wolves on Friday evening.

The Sundance team started out strong, trailing only by four points after one quarter of play. A scoring slump throughout the second quarter put the girls behind by 12 going into the halftime break.

Holding the Wolves to only five points throughout the third quarter the Lady Bulldogs were able to dig themselves out and come within two points of the lead, making it yet another close ballgame between these two teams. With the fourth quarter underway the teams were back and forth as the points went on the board.

Jaylin Mills led the charge for the Bulldogs, dropping in 17 points for the night, while Talissa Fischbach and Kailee Gill were a dynamic duo for the Lady Wolves, adding 16 and 13 points respectively for the night and helping Moorcroft take a 42-36 victory.

It will be a light week for the Lady Bulldogs as they prepare for a conference game in Tongue River on Sat., Feb. 4.

SHS Boys

There was a sense of intensity lingering in the gym as the Sundance Bulldogs and Moorcroft Wolves took to the floor in Moorcroft on Friday night. Both sides were looking for a win but only one would come out on top.

The first half of play was evenly matched and the score was tied at 23 going into the halftime break. It was the third quarter that would be the deciding factor for these two teams.

The Bulldogs began to find themselves in foul trouble and unable to slow the Moorcroft offense. Behind the scoring of Cole Stripp, the Moorcroft Wolves outscored the Bulldogs throughout the second half.

Stripp put up 17 points for the night, and hit an impressive 10 for 12 from the free throw line. In the end, Moorcroft took a 64-51 win over the Bulldogs.

Despite the loss, Jake Schommer and Eli Gill put up double-digit scoring for the Bulldogs as they dropped in 22 and 11 points respectively for the team.

The Bulldogs will not dwell long on their loss as they prepare for the Tongue River Eagles this week.

"We have a tough game this weekend against Tongue River, they're the number one team in the state and are athletic and physical. We're going to need to step up on the defensive end of the court and take away their dribble drive and post to post passes," head coach Nick Olson stated.

The Sundance team will travel to face the Eagles on Saturday this week.
