SHS Bulldogs open cross country season at Newcastle Invitational

The Sundance High School Cross Country team opened its season Fri., Aug. 27 at the Newcastle Invitational in Newcastle.

Freshman Angel Villegas finished second in the junior varsity meet. Villegas ran his first 5000-meter race in a time of 21:43.

Senior Andrew Davis finished behind Villegas for third-place in a time of 21:59. Junior Kort McLaughlin placed sixth in a time of 22:27.

Freshman Kyten Johnson was ninth in a time of 22:59, while freshmen Wyatt Flahaven and Holden Ayer finished 11th and 14th in times of 23:12 and 24:33, respectively.

The Bulldogs’ high-placed finishes earned the junior varsity team a first-place finish above Newcastle. The first-place team finish set a positive tone for the start of the season.

The Bulldogs have one middle school runner, sixth-grader Carter Croell, who ran 2500 meters in a time of 13:30.

The Bulldogs have a young team this year, but co-coaches Ann Marie Mickle and Jen Jungwirth are excited for the opportunity to grow the Bulldog running program.

“We’ve already seen growth among the team just through practices,” said Mickle. “Not only are the boys focused on their runs, but they are setting goals to accomplish over the course of the season to help propel them forward.”

The Bulldog cross country team competes in Spearfish, Fri., Sept. 3 and in Belle Fourche, Thurs., Sept. 9.
