Church to send greetings to service members

If a family member is serving overseas in the armed forces and would appreciate the occasional message to let them know they are thought of, the Church of Christ in Sundance would like to hear from you. Church member Chris Nye has taken charge of a project to send birthday and holiday greetings to servicemen and women with links to Crook County.

It’s a means of thanking them for their service, Nye says. The church would like to ensure that those who are serving their country are aware of the gratitude their community feels.

“I was in the service myself and I was a Vietnam veteran. When I came back from Vietnam, I was not well received by the general public,” he explains.

“Times have changed and we want to make sure that the perception of support for our troops, particularly overseas, is positive rather than negative.”

Nye stresses that no religious pamphlets or solicitations will be sent as part of this project. Contact information is being sought from family members to ensure that those who are sent greetings will be pleased to receive them.

“The people who are related to people who are serving overseas would know better whether or not they would be receptive to getting cards from a church,” he says.

“Some people are very touchy on the subject and would regard it as an intrusion. We don’t want to discuss articles of faith with them, we just want to let them know that they are appreciated.”

The greetings, Nye explains, will include, “Cards at holidays and for their birthdays if the family gives us their birth date, a general ‘hello and how are you’. We will sign the cards from the members of the Church of Christ, not any individual name.”

The church will take responsibility for purchasing and sending the cards. If you know of a serviceman or woman who would appreciate receiving these greetings, Nye asks that you send contact information the Sundance Church of Christ, PO Box 651, Sundance, WY 82729. If you have questions, leave a message for Nye at 283-3769 so he can get back to you.
