Goat education

Due to weather, local 4-H kids from the County 18 Homesteaders club led by Stevie Philips were unable to spend their planned afternoon at the Miller ranch with Tanja Miller's Alpenthal Dairy Goats. Fortunately, the back-up plan was equally entertaining and informative.

The 4-H kids spent a session at the Bearlodge Bakery and Greenhouse tasting samples of goat cheese provided by Miller and finding out how cheese is made, the history of the popular dairy product and the concept of "farm to table". The kids also washed their hands with goat milk soap and used goat milk lotion while finding out how simple inventions like soap made our lives so much easier.

The upcoming 4-H livestock camp will this year have a day designated to dairy goats, says Miller. More information is available from Sara Fleenor at the Extension Office.
