  • Old Stoney and Central Park gear up for summer opening

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 17, 2019

When the snows melt this year, Sundance residents can expect the thaw to uncover a new center point for their town. According to the current trajectory, Old Stoney will be fully refurbished and the park that lies next to it will be available to picnickers and partygoers. This week will see the Old Stoney rejuvenation project take another large step forward as contractors MAC Construction begin to pour concrete for the elevator. The elevator proved a sticking point when contractors and engineer Amanda Miller, Martin & Martin, realized the...

Before battle begins on our television screens, the city will once again play host to the chilliest fundraiser of the year: the Freeze Your Fanny run/walk. Starting and ending at the courthouse on Cleveland Street, the event will begin with registration at 7:30 a.m. on February 4. Walkers will get started at 8 a.m., followed by runners an hour later. • CenturyLink to be deregulated

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 17, 2019

Crook County customers having trouble with their CenturyLink phone service may have the option to take a subsidy that will provide them with internet phone service through HughesNet, according to Commissioner Jeanne Whalen. This will be done through the Public Service Commission (PSC), though CenturyLink will no longer be regulated by that body. Several people testified at a PSC hearing regarding the deregulation of CenturyLink on behalf of those customers in Crook County who have been experiencing issues with their phone service for many...

  • Going up

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 17, 2019

This month's jump in price for postage stamps will be larger than any Postmistress Pam Craig has seen before in her 31-year career. Prior to the January 27 increase of 5 cents for a first class letter stamp, Craig is encouraging the community to purchase forever stamps at the current price. "I've ordered a lot – and I can order more," she smiles. "They're good forever for the price of a one-ounce letter. So if you buy them up to the day before the rate goes up, you could save 5 cents for the r...

  • How bad is too bad?

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 17, 2019

The snowstorm that blew through Crook County on New Year's Eve has prompted department heads and the commissioners to review the policy on closing down the courthouse in times of bad weather. County Clerk Linda Fritz pointed out that the wrong person may be in charge of making the call and the guidelines themselves may be too strict. "The reason that I felt we need to do something different is that there have been days when we have been here that the weather is so [bad] that we shouldn't have ou...

1 Years Ago The Times January 15, 1919 Dr. and Mrs. Clarenbach are home from Cheyenne, where the doctor was subpoenaed as a witness before the grand jury. Master Charley did not go with his parents, he and Miss Williamson remaining in charge of the home until the latter became ill, when Charley took his temporary abode with his friend, Mrs. Rose Farrell. John Nefsy was in from the ranch last night. The Nefsy Bros. had just finished their own threshing, John said, having had their machine out on a circuit of the surrounding country and still...

  • Caregiver support group meeting in Sundance

    Jan 17, 2019

The Wyoming Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association is pleased to announce that a support group for caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias is now meeting regularly in Sundance. Nearly 10,000 people in Wyoming are living with Alzheimer’s disease, and 28,000 family and friends are helping to care for them. Alzheimer’s is often referred to as a ‘caregivers disease’ because of the tremendous toll – physically, emotionally and financially – it takes on caregivers. “We are very fortunate to have a volunteer who has stepped up and is...

  • Crook County Weed and Pest – 2018 Report

Andrew Litzel, Crook County Weed and Pest District Supervisor|Jan 17, 2019

The past year at the Crook County Weed and Pest was productive and eventful. We had many obstacles and new challenges to overcome, but overall a very successful year of weed and pest control. Prairie Dogs: A very snowy winter season from January to March made prairie dog control challenging for local landowners. We had plenty of snow and cold weather late into spring, keeping the prairie dogs down in their holes. This made poisoning during the labeled season (October 1 to March 15) difficult....

  • Updates from the Legislature

    Tyler Lindholm, HD 1 Representative|Jan 17, 2019

Greetings from...Cheyenne! It was a busy first week with the inauguration of Governor Mark Gordon and the start of the 65th General Session of the Wyoming Legislature. As of Friday, more than 200 bills had been filled for consideration and committee work was in full swing. One of the highlights was hearing Governor Gordon deliver his first State of the State address to a Joint Session of the House and Senate. This was our first opportunity, as legislators, to hear from Governor Gordon about his...

  • Our View

    Jan 17, 2019

What happens in Washington, D.C. often seems to stay in Washington, D.C., at least from the perspective of those of us living in the boonies. By the time they reach us, it feels like the ripples of legislation are too gentle to be felt. But when it comes to the longest government shutdown in American history, the opposite has proven to be true: it’s our friends and neighbors who are suffering the fallout, not Congress and the presidential administration. You’ve probably heard the estimates that 800,000 American people are still working wit...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Jan 17, 2019

Dear Editor: In his letter to the editor last week, Ted Davis implies that if Wyoming did not allow so-called “switch voting” that Foster Friess would have been the Republican nominee, rather than Mark Gordon. Mr. Davis states that statewide there were 10,392 Democrats who voted in the Republican primary, and implies they most likely cast their ballots for Gordon, the more moderate candidate, thereby “stealing” the nomination from the candidate who would have been the choice of the party faithful. I think I agree with Mr. Davis that a majorit...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 17, 2019

For the first couple of years after I sailed across the pond, I sometimes felt as though I were speaking into a vacuum. I found myself stuck in a surreal no man's land where my meaning was being dismissed or ignored and I couldn't work out why. It turned out that I was using all the wrong words. A respected polling company back in the UK has just explained this phenomenon. As if I hadn't already had ample opportunity to work it out for myself, YouGov performed a survey that proved Britain and...

  • Dear Mom and Dad: Cool it

    Jan 17, 2019

By Karissa Niehoff, Executive Director of the National Federation of State High School Associations and Ron Laird, Commissioner of the Wyoming High School Activities Association If you are the mother or father of a high school athlete here in Wyoming, this message is primarily for you. When you attend an athletic event that involves your son or daughter, cheer to your heart’s content, enjoy the camaraderie that high school sports offer and have fun. But when it comes to verbally criticizing game officials or coaches, cool it. Make no mistake a...

  • Know it. Name it. Stop it

    Sarah Pridgeon|Jan 17, 2019

One in every six American women and one in 17 men have been impacted by the psychological terror of being stalked. This January marks the fifteenth National Stalking Awareness Month, a call to action to recognize and respond to a serious crime that too often goes unrecognized and unaddressed – sometimes, until it is too late. Crook County Family Violence will be marking the occasion with a training session on January 18 to educate the community about stalking and the impacts it can have that are often underestimated. “The training will bre...

On December 28, Crook County Dispatch received a complaint of a theft that had occurred east of Moorcroft. While on routine patrol, according to the affidavit of probable cause, a Sheriff’s Office Sergeant observed in plain sight on Schoenewald’s property a piece of building material that matched the ones reported to have been stolen. Rebecca Maupin|Jan 17, 2019

SHS Boys vs. NSI The Sundance Bulldogs were able to hold NSI to single digit scoring for three quarters as they pulled off a 57-30 victory on Friday night. While it was an excruciatingly slow start to the game it was not from lack of effort on either team. The Bulldogs defense pressured the Wolves and forced multiple turnovers in which they were unable to capitalize. With 4:30 left in the first quarter, the score was 3-2 in favor of the Bulldogs. As the second quarter got underway, Kye Taylor...
