Sundance seventh graders win Poppy Poster prizes

For many years, Sundance art teacher Tobi Miller has had all of her seventh grade students (33 this year) participate in the American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) Unit 80 (Hulett and Sundance) poppy poster contest. The ALA poppy poster co-chairs are Tracy Bush, Hulett, and Janet Cole Lake, Sundance.

This year's Sundance winners are Benny Wilen, first; Carsyn Kolbach, second; and Augustus Wood, third. Each winner received a cash prize, and their posters go on for further competition. All the posters are on display at the Crook County Library in Sundance.

The American Legion red poppy was popularized by the wartime poem In Flanders Fields. Written by Lt. Col. John McCrae, MD, while serving on the front lines during World War I, the poem honors soldiers killed in battle. The Auxiliary distributes poppies in the summer, and donations are used to support many programs that benefit veterans.
