Bulldogs run strong at Wright

The Sundance Bulldog varsity boys' cross country team earned the top team spot at the Brittany Rentas Memorial Cross Country meet Sat., Sept. 30 in Wright. All Bulldog runners found success after not competing Sept. 22, when the Sundance Invitational was canceled due to storms.

Four Bulldog runners finished the 5000-meter varsity boys race in the top 10, securing the team win over Wright, Tongue River and Glenrock. Junior Angel Villegas placed sixth in a time of 20:22.26.

Senior Deklan Gill ran in 20:26.25, placing seventh. Junior Parker Skeens competed in his first meet for the Bulldog varsity team, running in 21:17.05, placing eighth, and junior Wyatt Flahaven rounded out the pack with a time of 21:35.21, placing ninth. 

Junior Kyten Johnson ran in a time of 22:22.18, while teammates and fellow juniors Holden Ayer and Jager McLaughlin ran in times of 22:33.75 and 24:24.88, respectively. 

Freshman Maddison Neiman placed tenth in the girls' varsity race, running in a time of 27:04.66.

The middle school Bulldog team saw great success, as well.

Eighth-grader Rylan Asheim finished eighth in the junior high boys 3k, running his personal best of 14:41.90. Asheim defended his eighth place finish the duration of his race, proving his continuous growth as an athlete this season. Sixth-grader CJ Koep also competed, finishing in a time of 15:35.36.

Seventh-graders Remington Johnson and Eva Stark placed fifth and seventh, respectively. Johnson ran a time of 15:17.05, while Stark finished in 15:51.21. Seventh grader Taylor Asheim ran in a time of 19:16.12, while seventh grader Ava Cooney ran in 19:59.51. Trinity Finn, also seventh grade, crossed the finish line in 25:30.12.

"Coach Jungwirth and I are so proud of the runners this week. Our team had a great day today all around," said co-coach Ann Marie Mickle. 

The high school team will run in Gillette on Fri., Oct. 6. The 2A Powder River Conference Meet is Friday, Oct. 13 in Newcastle. The season culminates with the 2A State Cross Country meet in Cheyenne Oct. 21.
