CDC recommends booster shots

COVID-19 is no longer considered a pandemic, but the Centers for Disease Control are nevertheless recommending that everyone over the age of six months consider an updated vaccine this fall alongside your flu shot.

The updated vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are now available and the CDC says they are the best protection against hospitalization and death, and also reduce the chances of Long COVID. An updated vaccine is recommended if you have not received a COVID-19 vaccine within the last two months.

“We have more tools than ever to prevent the worst outcomes from COVID-19,” said Director Mandy Cohen, M.D., M.P.H. “CDC is now recommending updated COVID-19 vaccination for everyone 6 months and older to better protect you and your loved ones.”

The virus is always changing, and protection from a vaccine wanes over time. A booster shot restores your immunity levels while providing enhanced protection against the variants that are currently in circulation.

Most Americans are still able to get a vaccine for free, covered through your health insurance at no cost or free through local health centers, state/local/tribal/territorial health departments and pharmacies participating in the CDC’s Bridge Access Program, which launched this month to maintain access to vaccines for uninsured Americans.

For the first time, vaccines are available this season for all three viruses responsible for the most hospitalizations: COVID-19, RSV and flu.
