Old Stoney celebrates centenary

Sundance’s famous historic school will be celebrating its centenary this weekend and the whole community is invited to the party.

Old Stoney’s birthday celebration will be held on August 19 from 1 to 4 p.m.

“We will be having birthday cake, which will be served at 2 p.m.,” says Rocky Courchaine, Museum Director.

Live music throughout the event will feature local artists including Dennis Mack and Matt Stefanich, performing live outside in Sundance Square. The farmer’s market will also be taking place in Sundance Square, including ice cream and food vendors.

Tours of the building will be available during the event. Entrance fees to Old Stoney will be waived, although donations will be accepted.

“All the annuals we have will be out in the building so that people can go through them and look at them,” Courchaine says.

A silent auction will take place throughout the afternoon, featuring historic artifacts such as copies of the Crook County centennial newspaper, as well as locally produced art, crafts and jewelry. This will be located in the park unless in the case of inclement weather, when items will be moved inside Old Stoney.

“It all goes to Old Stoney,” Courchaine says of the proceeds from the auction.

The rejuvenation of the building is ongoing, with just one more floor left to complete. Old Stoney’s third and final floor, the auditorium on the top level, will also include a catering kitchen, bathroom and large and small meeting rooms.
