100 Years Ago

May 24, 1923

Preliminary work on the Crook County high school building at Sundance is practically finished and actual construction will begin immediately. The de3tail of the basement proved more of a job than anticipated, also the amount of rock to be quarried made it a large task to secure sufficient within a short radius of the site.

Those in charge of the primary operetta last week wish to extend appreciation for the liberal attendance and also to Mesdames Rounds, Schloredt and Ilsley for their valued service in making it a success.

Workmen last Sunday dismantled the boiler and engine of the Sundance flour mill and loaded the machinery on trucks, pulling out Monday for Osage, where it will be used in oil development.

May 20, 1948

In an effort to get the new road in Crook County, between Moorcroft and Sundance, to be made necessary by the construction of Keyhole dam, relocated across the dam, a group of county citizens have petitioned state and national officials for favorable consideration and action relative to the building of the road. Two new road locations are now under consideration, one across the dam and the other across Deer Creek Flats.

Roy and Glen Cameron of the Farrell vicinity have sold their 3160-acre ranch to O.H. Queen. Queen will take possession this fall.

May 17, 1973

In a major action, the Crook County School District No. One board hired Delbert Harbaugh as Sundance elementary principal on a ten-month contract. Earlier this year, Harbaugh had resigned as Sundance assistant superintendent and elementary principal.

A small bunkhouse and several acres of grass and timber were the victims of a fire Monday at the Howard Zimmerschied ranch in the Carlile area. Approximately five acres of grass and timber were burned in the fire which was controlled by rural units and four units from Sundance.

May 21, 1998

Robert P. Hegge II has announced his intention to run for the Justice of the Peace for Crook County. The position is currently held by Ron Waugh. Hegge is a Crook County native growing up on his family’s ranch between Sundance and Beulah. He graduated from Sundance High School in 1993 and has received a B.A. degree in Administration of Justice from the University of Wyoming.
