Colorado man charged after allegedly throwing knives at deputies

A Colorado man faces multiple felony charges after being arrested following an alleged domestic incident and then attempting to attach Crook County Sheriff’s Office deputies with two of three knives on his person while in a holding cell at the detention center.

On March 8, a Sheriff’s Office Deputy was dispatched to the Aladdin Motel for a reported domestic. Upon arrival, he spoke with the female who made the complaint.

According to the alleged victim, she and Corby Nantkes had been arguing outside their motel room and she was concerned things might turn physical, so she locked herself in her vehicle.

Nantkes allegedly began to hit the front passenger window with a battery jump starter, which caused it to shatter. The victim reported that she exited the vehicle and ran to the Aladdin store.

A witness reported he had heard the noise and witnessed the victim run towards the store with Nantkes in pursuit. The deputy reports that the witness yelled at him to stop, which resulted in a “scuffle” that ended with Nantkes on the ground and bleeding from a cut to his eyebrow.

The witness stated that Nantkes became very compliant and waited for law enforcement to show up.

A second witness corroborated the story, and said that she confronted Nantkes, who cursed at her to go back into her motel room.

Nantkes was arrested and placed in a patrol vehicle, where he allegedly became very agitated and began hitting his head on the walls of the cage and screaming. The deputy reports that he then began trying to kick the vehicle window out, punched the windows and made threatening statements, while wiping blood all over the cage.

Nantkes was eventually turned over to deputies at the Crook County Detention Center. He was brought under control and a search allegedly revealed items consistent with drug paraphernalia on his person.

A deputy allegedly asked Nantkes multiple times if he had any drugs, weapons or alcohol and advised him that bringing any of those items into the jail would be a felony. Nantkes allegedly answered no each time.

Nantkes was assisted to a holding cell and his restraints were removed. At this time, according to court reports, he was still combative.

Around five minutes later, two deputies observed Nantkes on camera removing his jackets and then holding what appeared to be a knife to his tongue. He then allegedly slid the weapon under the door and replaced it with another knife in his hand.

Several deputies regrouped and gave Nantkes commands to drop the weapons and lay face down on the floor with his hands behind his back. While one deputy was attempting to line up a clear shot with the taser, he allegedly saw Nantkes make a throwing motion and observed a knife hit the door and land in the booking area.

Nantkes alleged repeated this with a third knife, at which point he obeyed commands and deputies were able to secure him.

Nantkes faces three felony counts of taking deadly weapons into a jail and two felony counts of interference with a police officer, each carrying a maximum penalty of ten years of incarceration, a $10,000 fine or both.

Nantkes has also been charged with two misdemeanor counts of property destruction and defacement, one misdemeanor count of breach of the peace and one misdemeanor count of interference with a peace officer.
