100 Years Ago

March 22, 1923

Fred Menzer and George Ruggless have received the supplies for their roofing contract on the courthouse. They expected to break in on the job this week but are held up pending a settlement of blizzardy weather conditions.

Word from Washington Monday was to the effect that Senator Francis E. Warren has nominated William H. Hawken and Elmer D. Smith as candidate and alternate respectively for examination to enter the United States naval academy at Annapolis. Both these young men are deserving young citizens of Sundance and will give a good account of themselves when called before the examining board.

County Clerk Ball has received word from Supt. G.A. Duthie of the Black Hills Forest that there will be an item of six miles of road construction in the Bear Lodge this year. The proposed road work will start near the Willson ranches on Beaver creek and give an auto trail to the Taylor Divide.

Arrangements are practically completed whereby Tom Roark takes over the Cosy Corner, formerly conducted by M.D. Holbrook. Mr. Roark will conduct a short order lunch, with a meat market in connection.

March 18, 1948

Meeting to make their final decision on redistricting for Crook County school districts, the county committee voted to set the county up in one district and to draw up a set of by-laws. Present at the meeting were A.G. Morgan, Roy Cameron, Dell Evans, R.E. Anderson, Robert Schloredt, Porter Long, Russell French, Ralph Nichelson and a number of visitors.

State Representative and Mrs. A.W. Storm were in Sundance and announced that they were holding an auction sate at their home in Hulett in preparation for leaving for Lewiston, Idaho where they will visit their son Wesley this summer. Del has been in poor health lately and is leaving this section of the country upon advice of doctors.

Members of the Devils Tower Post No. 4311 V.F.W. elected Bud Miller as commander for the ensuing year. Other officers elected were Senior Vice Commander Merle Sisson; Junior Vice Commander Bill Durfee; Advocate Ted Rounds; Quartermaster O.C. Dinkins; Chaplain Wesley Nussbaum; Trustee Chet Guidinger; Adjutant Rex Dillon; Officer of the day Kenneth Weaver; Service Officer Alvin Reimer; Guard Charles Tobin.

50 Years Ago

March 15, 1973

A rip-roaring storm, moving from the east Tuesday night, dumped 12 inches of heavy wet snow across the area, chocking streets and blocking highways. Temperatures remained on the moderate side. Highways were blocked Wednesday morning and about the only travel in Sundance was by Snowmobile.

A meats judging event was held here Saturday with over 30 4-h members and leaders attending. The event was held at North Pole Lockers where owner Les Waugh demonstrated the cutting of various meats. Top Crook County judgers were: Seniors – Monte Moeller, Jeanine Eixenberger, Coleen Necklason and Doug Watson. Juniors – Scott Dillinger, Nan Nuckolls, Murray Moeller and Stacey Moeller. Beginners – Dawn Nuckolls, Shelby Moeller, Christy McKenney and Rhonda Watson.
