100 Years Ago

January 25, 1923

Lawrence Good is completing the ice harvest from Medicine Lake this week, putting in sixty tons for the creamery under management of the Spearfish Co-operative.

John Grice installed a large furnace this week in the hardware store, thus completing his basement program that started last fall. The heating plant comes from Duhamel Co. of Rapid City.

Plans for early start on the high school are going along smoothly and bids will be called for shortly for the construction. The site east of the courthouse has been tested to a depth of nine feet, finding a body of heavy gravel, which will insure good drainage. Contractors were here this week to look over the situation.

State Game Commissioner Smith has announced his intention of prosecuting the slayers of the Mongolian pheasants introduced in the state several years ago. The birds became numerous soon after their introduction but recently their ranks have been thinned by hunters. One man was arrested but released again because evidence against him was insufficient.

75 Years Ago

January 29, 1948

Heavy snow on the business district streets in Sundance, which was causing considerable inconvenience to car owners, was pushed from the curbs to the center of the street Saturday by crew members of the state highway department. This favor is greatly appreciated by all concerned.

Ray's Café, which has been closed since January 18, will reopen Saturday night with a completely redecorated interior and some new facilities. The managers, Mr. and Mrs. John Schwartz returned Tuesday from a vacation trip. The Model Grocery interior has been recently retouched inside with a fine coat of white paint and Lee's Pharmacy is getting the finishing touches this week of an interior paint job. Appearance of all the buildings mentioned has been greatly improved by the paint jobs.
