Nov. 24, 1921

The Northern Wyoming Telephone company is contemplating the installation of metallic service between Gillette and Edgemont and Gillette and Sheridan next season according to reports. The isolation of Gillette so far as telephone service is concerned will soon be a thing of the past.

Snow accompanying the recent storm has put the auto out of business temporarily. Cecil Caulkins is making the Aladdin line on runners, and the Upton line uses a house relay to Pheiffer hill. Will Vines still runs by gas to Spearfish but is ready with horses in the event of more snow and wind. B.H. Ealy also made the Moorcroft run by auto but Will Oudin used team to Carlile and Sam Geary likewise to Manhattan.

They said it could not be done, but Marcus D. Holbrook did it, and a half block of Sundance business houses are now electric-lighted. Mr. Holbrook purchased a lighting plant for his “Cosy Corner” restaurant, in the face of a great deal of adverse comment, and soon his neighbors were glad to purchase electric “juice” from him. It is a bit of private enterprise that is worthy of commendation. It is a step in the right direction.

Nov. 28, 1946

Hunting equipment, which included three rifles, ammunition, cooking utensils and bedding, went up in flames recently when the truck box on the truck belonging to A.J. Altizer caught on fire near Manderson, Wyoming as Altizer, Frank Warner, Ward Cure and Francis Hejde were returning from Cody after an expedition in pursuit of elk.

Blueprints for the proposed new gymnasium and shop building additions to the Sundance school were gone over Friday night of last week by members of the high school and grade school boards of education at a joint meeting. The building program as discussed would include a shop equipped to handle woodwork, auto mechanics and farm shop; a science laboratory equipped for chemistry, biology and physics; a lunch room or cafeteria; a room which could be equipped for a recreation room; and a combination auditorium and gymnasium capable of seating 500 peopled during an athletic contest or more than that if the stage was used.

Nov. 25, 1971

Crook County’s farm and ranch total, on the decline for several years, increased to 484 in the 1969 Census of Agriculture, according to figures released last week by the Bureau of the Census. The report showed the average farm and ranch size was 3195.7 acres with their average value of $119,627. Twelve of the county’s farms and ranches were incorporated according to the report.

Mrs. Gary Jensen was hostess Thursday for a surprise birthday coffee for Mrs. Garvice Roby in the Roby home. Eighteen persons were on the guest list.

Four SHS girls received honors during a speech meet held Friday and Saturday at Casper. Adviser Walter McKay said Cindy Sprague received a superior rating in oratory while excellent ratings went to Jan Cressman, Donna Crawford and Andrea Lee. The superior rating is the highest awarded.

Nov. 21, 1996

Zach Jay and Amber Fowlkes were awarded the national I Dare Your Leadership Award in recognition of personal integrity, balanced living and potential for leadership. The honor was presented by Darlene Christensen at ceremonies held at Achievement Day.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held at the site for the Hulett Senior Housing Project with over 50 people gathered for the occasion. Mayor Winnie Bush welcomed everyone and the Hulett High School band entertained. James S. Neiman and his wife Sally Ann turned over the first shovel for the project.
