100 Years Ago

June 9, 1921

County Clerk Ball received thirteen cans of young trout Thursday from the government hatchery at Story. The youngsters arrived in first class shape and were promptly placed in adjacent streams to the approximate number of 90,000. Another consignment has been applied for and will arrive some time in June.

The county clerk issued a license to marry Tuesday to Tom Zimmerschied of Carlile and Miss Helen A. Robinson of Moorcroft. It is understood the wedding took place yesterday at the home of the bride’s parents at Moorcroft. The bride is the talented daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Robinson, prominent residents of Moorcroft, while the groom is known all over the county for his sterling qualities of manhood.

June 6, 1946

A terrific explosion Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. completely dismantled the brick boiler house and laboratory of the Crook County Refinery and sent a 6000 pound boiler tank scooting up a hill 100 feet from the building. The explosion which was caused, it is believed by owner Andy Policky, by the boiler tank being overheated from lack of sufficient water broke a gas pipe and sent gasoline flowing down on to the highway before it could be diverted into a barrel. One attendant, LeRoy Arnold was at work at the time of the explosion. He was not injured.

Chas. B. Chittim, who for some time has operated the Texaco Service Station under the name of Chittim Motor, last week sold the service station business to Richard and Tom Hooper, both of Sundance, with the latter taking possession Monday of this week.

Merle A. Sisson, who followed the trade of welding and lathe and machine work during his time spent in the U.S. Army, Monday of this week opened at the old Hemler Machine Shop a welding and machine shop. Sisson says he is equipped to do welding and heavy drill press work and soon will be equipped to do lathe and machine work.

June 10, 1971

An Interstate 90 interchange at the Moskee road east of Sundance received heavy support from area residents Thursday night during a design public hearing held here by the Wyoming Highway Department. The hearing was held by WHD to discuss the design and route of the I-90 project running from the Custer monument just east of Sundance a distance of 7.872 miles to the vicinity of the Driskill reservoir.

Two new council members – Ray Buckman and Floyd Carr – took their seats Monday night at the regular meeting of the Sundance City Council with Mayor G.W. (Buster) Popham making several appointments for the council’s next term ending in May 1973. Primary discussion at the meeting centered around a proposal by the mayor to oil treat graveled streets in South Sundance to cut down on dust and mud.

A full slate of candidates for the position of county commissioner will great voters at the primary on August 20.
