100 Years Ago

June 2, 1921

G.W. Mosberger was in Sundance Thursday and announced that a sheepherders’ picnic will be held on Houston creek the last Sunday in June, to which all are invited.

Whether or not Babe Ruth is a real batter will not be determined until he plays on the Sundance diamond. It is suspected that his many circles are made when the ball is lost over a fence. There are no fences on the Sundance diamond – we use Sundance Mountain instead. Then put Skinny Dudrey in right, Ben Lazelle of Spearfish in center, and Quarnberg of Belle Fourche in left – Babe wouldn’t make a homer this year.

William Roberts of this city has received a letter announcing the death of his younger brother in England recently. The deceased acquired nationwide fame during the World War through his invention of a mechanism for the manufacture of shells, which increased the output four-fold. A large government plant for the installation of his process was completed only a few weeks prior to the inventor’s death.

75 Years Ago

May 30, 1946

Building of a new Methodist church, costing approximately $20,000, is being proposed for Sundance by Pastor Sanders B. Clayton and the board of trustees through a loyalty crusade, it was disclosed this week when circulars were mailed to members and friends of the church giving an outline of the floor plans for the proposed new edifice and showing the need for a new place of worship.

Leroy Schloredt, who is a flying student of Chuck Ice, of Spearfish made his first solo flight the middle of this month in a Piper Cub trainer. Lee is taking instructions at the Spearfish airport as are several other residents of the county. Bill Finch, also of Sundance is reported as having made his solo flight.

Captain Audra Bush has been discharged from the army nurse corps at the separation center at Fr. Sheridan, and is spending part of her leave with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.A. Bush at Hulett. Captain Bush spent fifty months in the service, three years being overseas duty.

50 Years Ago

June 3, 1971

Two men – Rick Lee, Sundance, and Bob Maynard, Deadwood, S.D. – became managers of the Dime Horseshoe Bar in Sundance June 1. The business is owned by Gary Jensen, Sundance.

Contestants in this year’s Miss Rodeo Crook County contest and Miss Kay Cox, 1970 Miss Rodeo Crook County, will appear on television Friday. The girls will appear on the “Party Line” program over KOTA-TV.
