100 Years Ago

Nov. 4, 1920

Commencing with a landslide in Ohio and continuing over the entire country, Senator Harding was elected president of the United States Tuesday by one of the most decisive votes in the history of American Politics.

A suggestion has been made which seems entirely feasible, that there be a county library established in Crook County, with the view of combining the office of superintendent of schools with that of county librarian. The law provides for one-fourth mill levy for library purposes, and this amount would be sufficient to establish the library.

Oct. 25, 1945

John E. Lindsey, co-publisher of The Sundance Times since October 1938, became the sole owner of that publication Thursday of last week when he purchased the interests of Velma Butterfield, co-publisher since July 1940. Mrs. Butterfield will continue as editor for a short time – probably until about the middle of December. The Butterfields plan to maintain their home here but expect to spend a few months this winter in the southwest.

Jack Mollenbrink, whose leg was broken just above the ankle in a motorcycle accident a week ago Sunday, returned home Monday from Hot Springs, S.D. where he was taken following the mishap. Bud Harper drove him home.

Nov. 5, 1970

Crook County voters turned loose an avalanche of votes for Republican candidates in the general election Tuesday. The only Democrats to crack the solid Republican front in the county were County Treasurer Karen Glover and Richard Macy, county attorney. Republican John Peterson, Sundance, stormed to victory the county sheriff contest. Republicans Joe Svoboda, Alva and Neal Garman, Sundance, were elected county commissioners.

Nov. 2, 1995

At a special meeting on Thursday, the Crook County Commissioners voted to lift the temporary land use moratorium. The meeting was called for the commissioners to meet with the County Land Use Planning and Zoning Commission. During that meeting, the Land Use Commission recommended the moratorium be dropped.
