Learning the basics

June 13, 2019

Sarah Pridgeon

Kids from across the county and beyond gathered at the fairgrounds over the last week to participate in the 307 Northeast Show Clinic. The goal of the clinic is to give kids learning opportunities to prepare livestock for showing. Above, Chase Marshall, northwest area agriculture and horticulture extension educator, discusses calf traits and explains what a judge may be looking for. The clinic focused on different animals each day, with June 5 dedicated to dairy goats, cats, poultry and rabbits, June 6 set aside for beef, sheep, goats and swine and June 8 and 9 for horses. As well as listening to expert presentations, kids had the opportunity to work with clinicians on each species, culminating in mock showmanship contests.
