Basketball teams take down Hulett

SHS Girls

The Sundance Lady Bulldogs closed out another week of non-conference play as they faced two more teams from South Dakota and their county rival, Hulett.

Monday night, the team had their final makeup game from the Stateline Shootout as the Belle Fourche Broncs came to town. The Lady Broncs started strong with their aggressive defense, stopping the Sundance team in their tracks.

Once the initial shock wore off and the Lady Bulldogs regained their focus, they were able to put some points on the board. The Lady Broncs, however, had already gained the advantage and took a 68-21 victory over the Bulldogs.

On Tuesday, Sundance was on the road to face their intra-county rival, Hulett Red Devils. This was a tight matchup between the two teams who stayed close throughout the first half of play.

The start of the second half was when the Bulldogs began to pull away, outscoring the Lady Devils 10-3 throughout the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs marched on to a 35-25 victory. Savanna Williams led the scoring charge for the Lady Bulldogs, putting in nine points on the night and securing six rebounds.

For their final matchup of the week the Sundance team was once again playing host as the Harding County Ranchers came to town. The Ranchers jumped out in a full court press to start the game, causing the Bulldogs to once again struggle to get the ball up the court.

As a result of the press, the Lady Ranchers went on a 7-0 run and put some space between themselves and Bulldogs. With a timeout called halfway through the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs gained their composure and began to close the gap, ending the first quarter down by three, 10-13.

Savannah Williams found her rhythm throughout the second quarter as she put eight of her 16 points on the board for the Bulldogs, six of those coming from behind the arc. Sundance, however, went into the halftime break still down 18-29.

The second half started slow for both teams, scoring only nine points between the two of them. Sundance got their offense moving throughout the fourth quarter putting up fourteen points and gaining momentum, unfortunately it was too late as time ran out and the Lady Ranchers took a 36-44 win.

The Lady Bulldogs will start conference play this week as they travel to Wright on Friday to take on the Panthers and host the Big Horn Rams on Saturday.  Play Saturday will begin at noon with JV girls, followed by JV boys. Varsity girls are set to tip off around 3 p.m.

SHS Boys

The Sundance boys’ basketball team rounded out their non-conference play this past week, splitting their games to Hulett and Hill City.

On Tuesday, the boys traveled to Hulett to take on the county rival Red Devils. The Bulldogs took charge throughout the first quarter of play, taking the initial 15-6 lead.

Throughout the second quarter, Sundance went into a scoring slump as the momentum changed and the Red Devils were able to put points on the board, going into the break down 19-22. The Red Devils carried their momentum into the third quarter, starting the second half with a 9-0 run.

Sundance was not phased and from there on the teams would trade the lead throughout the quarter as the rivalry heated up. The fourth quarter was dominated by Bulldog scoring.

Jake Schommer and Shane Tenke both made their way into double digits for the Bulldogs, scoring 20 points and 11 points respectively as Sundance went on to take a 51-45 victory over the Hulett Red Devils.

It was a tough go for the Bulldogs on Saturday as they faced the Hill City Rangers. A slow start for the team put them in a hole they couldn’t escape.

Trailing the Rangers 19-36 at the half, the Bulldogs could not find their offensive rhythm and were only able to add five points throughout the second half of play, falling to the Rangers 24-66.

The Sundance Bulldogs will have the week to prepare for their opening conference games this weekend. On Friday, the team will travel to Wright to face the Panthers and will host the Big Horn Rams on Saturday.
