Missing person rescued after ATV crash

A missing person was successfully found and rescued after two members of the public spotted their ATV upturned in a ravine beside Old Sundance Road.

On June 9, a Crook County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a report of a person missing from their Sundance home. The deputy was unable to locate the person in or around their home but, shortly afterwards, received a report of a side-by-side in the ditch on Old Sundance Road.

The deputy responded to the area and found the person who had reported the crash parked in the road, and the side-by-side off the east of the roadway down a steep ravine.

According to the deputy’s report, the side-by-side was on its top and had sustained major damage. The deputy was advised that the missing person was further down the ravine.

The deputy located the missing person and a second witness who was sitting with them. The missing person was laying on the ground and appeared to be wounded, and said they were experiencing back pain when they tried to move.

Life Flight was summoned to the location, while a second deputy and EMS provided assistance in transporting the missing person up the ravine to the road. They were transported via ambulance to Life Flight’s landing location and transported to hospital.

On examining the scene, the deputy reports that it appeared the missing person had been traveling north when they left the roadway, where they drove along heading slightly downhill until they struck a tree.

At that point, it appeared that the side-by-side rolled downhill before coming to a rest on its top. According to the deputy’s report, it appeared that the missing person was ejected from the side-by-side during the crash.
