City considers re-introducing clean-up days

Back in the day, said Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz to the council, the City of Sundance used to have an annual clean-up day. This began with efforts from the community to tidy and clean the streets and parks of the city and ended with a BBQ to reward the participants for their effort.

Lenz asked the council if they would be interested in bringing the tradition back, citing this newspaper’s new regular article that premiered two issues ago to outline ways for citizens to contribute to their community.

A clean-up day is a positive opportunity for people to contribute, she said, and in turn have the opportunity to feel a sense of pride in their community – and, in the case of people who are new to the community, a sense of belonging.

Though Lenz was not sure which organization sponsored the event in the past, she suggested that sponsorship could be sought for the future. She also suggested asking the schools if they would be interested to participate, with a pizza party celebration at the end of the event.

Mayor Paul Brooks noted that several community members have let him know that they would be interested in being a part of an organized clean-up of the creek.

The council expressed approval for a clean-up day and asked for a proclamation at next month’s regular meeting that will designate a specific day for the event.
