Minnesota man arrested for smuggling prescription drugs

Jorge Colon Bermudez of Minnesota faces multiple felony possession charges after a large quantity of prescription drugs were discovered in his vehicle during a traffic stop.

On August 4 at around 10:17 p.m., a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper noticed that the vehicle behind was catching up to him as he traveled at 65 mph in the construction zone of I-90. The trooper’s rear radar gave a reading of 80 mph, so he pulled over to allow the vehicle to pass and then conducted a traffic stop.

As he approached the vehicle, the trooper reports noticing the vehicle was cluttered with trash and the center console was covered with cigarette ash. The driver, identified as Jorge Colon Bermudez, allegedly appeared disheveled and his shirt showed recent stains.

Colon Bermudez allegedly claimed he was traveling between Arizona and Minnesota and was not carrying luggage as he owns homes in both places. The trooper reports running Colon Bermudez’s license, which returned a non-extradition warrant for possession of marijuana.

The trooper asked dispatch to check Colon Bermudez for border crossing and was advised he had crossed the Mexico-United States border on August 3. The trooper informed Colon Bermudez that he was suspicious of his travel plans and was given permission to search the vehicle.

A Campbell County Sheriff’s Deputy arrived to assist with a K-9 unit, which allegedly alerted to the presence of a controlled substance in the vehicle. A search allegedly revealed four plastic baggies above the rear tires in the trunk containing approximately 2000 capsules weighing 2.3 lbs of an unknown white powder, as well as three sealed glass containers containing pills weighing approximately 151.3 grams.

Colon Bermudez allegedly stated the capsules were Tramadol and Xanax that he purchased in Mexico and intended to sell in Minnesota to factory workers. He also allegedly said he did not have a prescription for the pills.

Colon Bermudez has been charged with four felonies, including two counts possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and two counts of possession of a controlled substance. All charges carry maximum penalties of two years of incarceration, a $2500 fine or both.
