100 Years Ago

May 19, 1921

A phenomenal display of the northern aurora was observed at this point late Saturday night. The entire heavens were covered by the kaleidoscopic display, and it was considered most unusual at this latitude.

Tom Melzer has been busy the past week moving his thorobred Herefords to pasture in Crook County. Saturday he placed seventy young bulls on the Harry Hawken ranch and Sunday brought his two top-notch herd bulls to Sundance. These animals are premier in their class, weighing respectively about 1800 and 2400. They represent a valuation of $11,000. Mr. Smelzer will move his cows and calves this week to David Watson’s home ranch.

May 16, 1946

Doris Seely, Sundance was the first place winner last Saturday in the annual county spelling contest held in Sundance for grade school students with Nellie Wood of Hulett placing second, and Shirley Sisson of Sundance third and fourth place winner was Rheta Sims, Upton.

The first of the week the U.S. weather bureau station instruments were moved from the Wm. Seig property to the court house square where it will be in charge of Charles Oudin, deputy sheriff. Oudin says that he has had to order new parts for the station and that it will probably be about the first of next month before he can start taking daily readings of maximum and minimum temperatures and recordings of precipitation.

May 20, 1971

Two masked persons, one carrying a rifle, held up the Colony Truck Stop at Colony, Wyo. Early Monday morning and escaped with $1400 in cash. Sheriff John Peterson said Wednesday that investigation into the holdup is continuing. The station is owned by Pete Shear, Belle Fourche.

April Glick graduated from the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy after completion of ten weeks of Peace Officer Basic Class. April received her certification at a ceremony held at the academy in Douglas, WY. April has been employed but the Crook County Sheriff’s Office as a dispatcher since April of 1992. As a dual certified dispatcher and peace officer, April will be an asset to the Crook County Sheriff’s Office and to the people of Crook County.
