100 Years Ago

May 12, 1921

The formal opening of the Crook County Red Cross library took place Saturday, when the general public was invited to the use of the choice selection of volumes which comprise the library at present. The classifying and arranging of the books has been a long, irksome task, and the ladies of the Delphian society have shown splendid public spirit in their unremitting efforts to bring the work to a close.

Since Saturday the drill has been tapping steadily on the first Sundance, Wyo. well on the Fred Hawkens gypsum dome. At last report the bore was down a little over 100 feet, and had encountered hard blue limestone. This makes slow drilling, but is expected to go through this formation in twenty to thirty feet and reach the red beds.

May 9, 1946

Thursday of this week crewmen will pour cement for a side walk circumscribing the Crook County War Memorial in courthouse square. Forms were laid the fore part of the week. The men have finished flooring the band stand.

Meeting at the school house May 1 interested parties formed a new 4-H club in Sundance to be known as the Sundance 4-H Busy Bees. Officers elected were Marlene Snook, president; Delores Stagemeyer, secretary; Joan Dudrey, recreation leader; Jennie Haptonstall, song leader; Beverly Schulze, news reporter.

Ben Moore of Sheridan has purchased the George W. Richards ranch nine miles south of Hulett and will take possession May 20. On Tuesday, Richards is holding an auction sale at the ranch. Following the sale Mr. and Mrs. Richards will move to Sundance where they have bought a home.

May 13, 1971

A moderate turnout of Sundance voters went to the polls Tuesday and re-elected Gerald W. (Buster) Popham to his third term as mayor. Two of Popham’s Regular Party running mates – Floyd Carr and Glen Wyatt – were elected to four-year terms on the city council. William (Ray) Buckman, Progressive party candidate, won election to serve the two-year unexpired term of Patterson Keller.

Supt. Roger Thorson said Wednesday that a site for the proposed new elementary school building has been selected. He said the site is located on county fairgrounds property just east of the present football field.

Wyoming’s national and state leaders have contacted Dr. William C. Rust, president of U.S. International University, asking that USIU reconsider its decision to cancel its planned Sundance campus. USIS announced last week that it would not open the campus on the former Sundance Air Force Station site because of the adverse publicity regarding the transfer of surplus government property to the university.

May 16, 1996

At a special meeting Monday afternoon, the Sundance City Council approved a pre-annexation agreement and the subdivision plat for Cliff Moya’s Sierra Vista subdivision east of Sundance. A pre-annexation agreement was also discussed for the Tenke trailer park east of Sundance and the council moved to have the city attorney proceed with drawing up the agreement.
