Skeens, Marchant bring home top ten finishes

The Sundance High School Bulldogs completed their 2020 season at the 2A State Cross Country Meet in Douglas Oct. 24. The snow-covered course proved a challenge to the Bulldog runners as they competed in nearly four inches of snow and slush and below 20-degree temperatures.

The adversity did not stop senior Hunter Skeens and freshman Rylie Marchant from claiming top ten spots in the competition, however. Skeens placed 4th in a time of 19:02, while Marchant finished 7th in a time of 24:45. It was Marchant’s first time competing in the state 2A meet.

Freshman Deklan Gill placed 21st in his first state meet, finishing in a time of 21:29. Sophomore Kort McLaughlin finished in a time of 23:07 for 37th place and Senior Josh Pridgeon ended in a time of 23:35 for 41st place.

Freshman Jordan Mouat also made her debut at the state competition, running in a time of 28:35.

“Each one of these athletes gave it their all, despite the tough conditions,” said co-coach Ann Marie Mickle. “The dedication and perseverance was evident as each crossed the finish line with as much extra push as they could.”

Mickle added the Bulldogs will miss their senior leadership from Skeens and Pridgeon.

“Both Hunter and Josh showed excellent leadership and mentorship to the younger athletes,” she said. “Practices were filled with laughs and we will miss them next season.”

Skeens and Marchant were both named to the All-Conference Team, as well.
