100 Years Ago

June 30, 1920

Mr. and Mrs. Will Vines went to Spearfish Sunday to attend the funeral of little Harry Sleep, aged six years, who was almost instantly killed Thursday. The boy ran too close to a bunch of horses in the pasture, when one kicked up playfully and struck him in the stomach.

In digging a well on this place south of Gillette John W. Moore says he went through a vein of coal 55 feet thick. One of his neighbors drilled a well 225 feet deep and the last 65 feet went into a vein of coal and he is not through it yet as the drill broke. More and more is the saying true that Wyoming has not yet begun to scratch the surface of her natural resources.

75 Years Ago

July 5, 1945

Despite unfavorable weather a good crowd was in Sundance to enjoy the annual Farmers Day Picnic held Saturday. The Sundance band entertained the crowd with music during the lunch time and again later in the afternoon. Winners of the horse shoe pitching contest, which followed the numerous races and other events for the younger crowd, were Bob Coker and Perry Roberts of Hulett. Bernard Harvey of Upton and Mitchell Ash of Devils Tower placed second while third prize went to Harry Reynolds and Herbert Finch, both of whom live near Sundance. In the ladies rolling pin throwing contest Mrs. Fred Grubb and Mrs. Snyder won the first two places.

July 2, 1970

Thirty-seven women battled sizzling temperatures over the weekend in the Sundance women’s invitational golf tournament with Betty Durfee, Sundance winning the championship.

Miss Gena Orr, daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Ted Orr has been named Wyoming Hereford Queen for 1970. She won the title last week during Wyoming Herford Day at Malm’s Cattle Co., Albin, Wyo., on the basis of a talk given on her knowledge of cattle.

Saturday was one of the hottest days that we’ve ever had. Temperatures registered from 104-114 around the region. We are in need of rain real bad.

June 29, 1995

A group of civic minded persons who desire to enrich the cultural arts in this area will be kicking off a fund drive to from a community Handbell Choir. Loretta Tonak will be the Sundance Community Handbell Choir director. Junior high students through adults are invited to become choir members. Also, Todd Kahler and Connie Hubbard will be choir advisors. A choir board will be formed and rehearsals will start in September.
