Eighth grade Lady Bulldogs take second

The 2019 eighth grade Bulldog Volleyball Team ended their season on Sat. Oct. 10 at the district tournament in Wright with a second-place finish and a 12-3 record. The road to the district tourney was a successful one, with the team ending up with a 10-2 record.

The team made great improvement over the course of the season, considering there were two seventh graders and one sixth grader moving up to fill the squad. Eighth graders Lexie Marchant and Aspen Jones were the team's captains and they both showed great leadership and poise.

Both girls played middle hitter and contributed many serving points, kills, blocks and just overall strong play over the course of the season. Breahnna Piekkola, Jade Weaver and Willow Lindholm also made positive contributions in various positions on the floor.

Seventh graders Shannon Gilmartin and Haylee Steeves displayed good all-around skills and Shannon Gilmartin led the team with the highest serving percentage and the most serving points for the season. Jaylin Mills stepped up as a sixth grader, demonstrating her setting skills as well as all-around hustle that was a huge benefit for the team this season.

In the tournament, the Lady Bulldogs started out strong and swept by the Hulett Red Devils with scores of 25-5 and 25-10.

The second round found the Bulldogs matched up against the Upton Bobcats. The Bulldogs defeated the Bobcats in straight sets of 25-17 and 25-18.

In the championship match, the girls fought hard against a strong Wright Lady Panther team, but lost in three games, 18-25, 25-21, 9-15.

I will be looking forward to watching the eighth graders move up and find success at the next level next year and am excited that we will have three returners next year to help carve out another successful season in 2020!
