Bulldog cross country wins conference

The conference cross country meet took place on Friday in Hulett. Facing off against four other teams and some tough hills, the Sundance Bulldogs were able to run away with a conference champion and three others placing in the top ten at the varsity level.

Hunter Skeens set the pace for the boys’ varsity race and it was a quick one at that. Crossing the finish line at 18:41, Skeens took first place and the conference championship.

Not far behind him was fellow teammate Titus Schelling who came in second with a time of 19:22. Josh Pridgeon and Kort McLaughlin rounded out the Bulldog boys’ varsity, placing 11th and 12th in the meet.

The Sundance girls’ runners were up against some stiff competition as three-time state champion Hailey Jones, from Moorcroft, set a new course record, finishing with a time of 20:17 and taking the conference championship. Tori Wheeler was the first Bulldog across the line, coming in second with a time of 23:25 and Darcy Flahaven finished in seventh for Sundance.

The junior high girls’ race was another exciting one to watch. Hulett’s Ahnya Ivie took the title with a time of 10:52, followed by Mallory Jones of Moorcroft (11:16). Rylie Marchant and Britt Wheeler were the first Bulldogs across the line, placing a tight third and fourth, respectively. Jordan Mouat and Riley Banker rounded out the Bulldog bunch finishing in ninth and 13th.

Deklan Gill paced the junior high Bulldog boys, crossing the line with a time of 11:07, in third place and earning him a conference medal. Angel Villegas was close behind, finishing fifth with a time of 11:31, followed by Kyten Johnson, who took seventh. Jager McLaughlin and Wyatt Flahaven rounded out the team taking 12th and 16th for the Bulldogs.

The top ten varsity finishers, Hunter Skeens, Titus Schelling, Tori Wheeler and Darcy Flahaven, will travel across the state to compete in the state meet on Friday in Star Valley.
