New economic dev committee launches

Sundance’s new economic development committee officially came together last week with the approval of its bylaws by the city council. The committee will be fundraising and accepting donations from the community in order to better assist businesses in the Sundance area, said Dan Fairbanks, who was sworn in as a member of the board on Tuesday.

Fairbanks stated that several donors have already stepped forward to assist and all contributions will be placed in the city’s general fund and allocated to the line item for economic development. He also shared a few of the initial thoughts and ideas that came out of the committee’s first meeting, during which it developed bylaws at the request of the city council.

Fairbanks requested permission to use a modified version of the city’s logo as the Sundance Chamber of Commerce does, “so we all have a cohesive look”, and said the committee will be looking into creating generic business cards with information about the board rather than individual members. The committee has also reached out to Roger Connett to serve as the county’s representative for the board, he said.

One of the first tasks the committee aims to tackle, said Fairbanks, is the development of a website. He asked the council if it would be possible to hook it onto the city website so that it comes up if someone searches online for the city.

The committee would like to include information such as current vacancies and new subdivision developments that would be of use to someone who was thinking of developing a business in Sundance. Said member Sheryl Klocker, it will also feature minutes of the committee’s meetings and bylaws.

City Attorney Mark Hughes confirmed that he has reviewed the bylaws, describing them as “simple and to the point” and stating he sees no reason to change them. The council approved the bylaws via a motion.

Lars Williamson and Sheryl Klocker were also sworn in as members of the new committee at Tuesday’s meeting of the council. Andy Miller and Randy Stevenson will be sworn in at a later date, rounding out the board.
