Continuing the Crook County News Since 1884

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

On October 24, 1944, a Japanese freighter, the Arisan Maru, was sunk while transporting 1800 Allied POWs from the Philippines to another POW Camp, possibly in Taiwan. There were six POW survivors.

Among the POWs lost, nine were from Wyoming. American Legion Post 19 has erected a monument honoring these nine men. The monument will be dedicated Thursday, October 24, 2019, the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the Arisan Maru, at Riverton Veterans Park.

One man, Martin Gianchino, enlisted from Crook County, Aladdin. I am attempting to locate any members of Martin’s family, to extend them an invitation to the dedication. I am asking for anyone with knowledge of his family to contact me.

Thank you,

Edward R. McAuslan
