May 21, 1919

Johnnie and Nels Pearson of Aladdin are reported to have run their car off the bridge at the stone house on Hay Creek just this side of Belle Fourche today, but fortunately neither of them was injured.

Lieut. Perry Smith, perhaps the only active flier from Crook County who did duty in France, was gladly greeted by Sundance friends upon his arrival in the city Monday. He is on only a 15-day leave and must return to Garden City, N.Y. Needless to say he has had many thrilling experiences, concerning which he has been to reticent to fully please his friends, but it is hoped they shall be able to get something out of him for public information and entertainment at a later date.

May 25, 1944

Official notification was received last week that Lt. Wesley Huckins, who had been reported missing since March 16, is a prisoner in Germany. Wesley, who is 25 years old, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy H. Huckins of Sundance and is the husband of Fern Shreeves. At the time Wes was reported missing a fellow aviator wrote that the four men in Wes’s ship were sent to bail out over enemy territory.

Opening of the new Crook County Frozen Food Locker plant will be held Saturday with a free lunch at noon to be given in celebration of by Fred Good, owner. The completed plant has 215 lockers, 43 of which are the extra large drawer type. A quick freezing unit is also located in the locker room, which has the new safety openings. The old bakery building houses the new locker but the building has been completely modernized inside, the walls replastered and painted.

May 22, 1969

A final farewell to Sundance Air Force Station and its personnel was said Saturday night during the Sundance Commercial Club’s Armed Forces Day banquet held to express appreciation to Sundance AFS personnel. Sundance AFS has been closed by the Air Force and the few remaining personnel will be leaving shortly. During the program, a model of the PM-1 nuclear power plant was presented to the city of Sundance by Maj. A. E. Anthony, Sundance AFS commander.

Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Talich, Sundance, are the winners of the Mother’s Day baby award from the Crook County Wool Growers Auxiliary. Mrs. Richard Snider, Auxiliary secretary-treasurer, presented Mrs. Talich and daughter Sharon Ellen with a leg of lamb and a cookbook.

May 26, 1994

Cris and Charlotte Mellott have announced that they will not be running for office this year. For the past four years Cris has served as Crook County Sheriff and Charlotte has served as Clerk of District Court. In their announcement, the Mellotts want the opportunity to pursue other business interests, and have, therefore, decided not to run.

Chief Justice Richard J. Macy announced that the state Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in Sundance Saturday, June 11. The cases will be heard in the Sundance High Auditorium. This court session will mark the first time in history that the Supreme Court has conducted proceedings in Sundance.
