March 26, 1919

The expenditure of six million dollars in the state of Wyoming from road construction will have a great effect upon business conditions. It will be putting money into the pockets of men returning from military service and at the same time will be giving us highways that will cheapen the marketing of all kinds of products and make businesses between communities more diversified and easier in every way.

Paul Yeoman of the Hulett Globe is a new U.S. commissioner of the Sundance land district, which should be a convenience to the Hulett country.

The ranch home of W.C. Shawver was destroyed by fire last Friday, entailing practically a total loss of about $2500, with no insurance. A defective flue is thought to have been the cause of the fire, which consumed most of the contents of the building. Mr. Shawver was in Sundance at the time of the fire, but neighbors rushed to the assistance of Mrs. Shawver and the children, although practically nothing could be saved.

75 Years Ago

March 23, 1944

Arrival of a carload of combines at Newcastle Monday was announced by Walt Tracy of the Tracy Motor Co. of Sundance. The shipment includes two 8 ft. combines and two 10 ft. combines. By the time this reaches the press he will have them in Sundance. These machines are the first combines received by him in two years, and require certificates from the war board for purchase.

Agreement has been reached whereby A.B. Durfee will become the new owner of the Binney Dry Goods it was announced this week by John Binney. Mr. Durfee, who is a brother of Jay Durfee of Sundance will “take over” April first Mr. Binney stated.

Lorin W. Harper (we all know him as Snooks) has his silver wings and his commission as Second Lieutenant in Uncle Sam’s airforce, having graduated as a combat pilot March 13 at Foster Field, Victoria, Texas.

March 20, 1969

Sundance Commercial Club Secretary Harold Bernd reported to the club on the status of the prospectus for a Bear Lodge ski area. He said Wyoming Congressmen had told him that the prospectus should be in the hands of District Forest Ranger John Windsor shortly. The prospectus has been in the works for several months.

March 17, 1994

Winter has taken its toll on deer and wild turkey numbers in the Black Hills portion of Northeast Wyoming, and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department warned hunters to expect reduced hunting success this spring and stiff hunting restrictions this fall. The winter in northeast Wyoming has been one with “extreme cold and extreme snow,” said Tom Dietrich, a hydrologist with the National Weather Service in Cheyenne.
