Bulldog teams face losses

SHS Girls

The Lady Bulldogs fell in the final seconds of their game against the Newell Irrigators on Tuesday night in Sundance.

The opening eight minutes of the game saw the Newell Irrigators controlling the tempo as well as the score. While turnovers plagued the Bulldogs, they were able to keep the score close trailing 7-12 at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs started to turn up the pressure on the Irrigators in the second quarter as they switched to a man-to-man defense and were able to handily control the defensive rebounds, pulling down 18 as a team on the night. While the Irrigators continued to push the ball, they were unable to finish and the Bulldogs continued to stay close on the scoreboard.

A series of steals and turnovers between the two teams left Sundance trailing by seven at the end of the second quarter.

As the second half of play opened up, the Lady Bulldogs began to chip away at the lead. With 2:40 left in the third quarter and the Bulldogs down by 3, the Irrigators called a time out, trying to break up the Bulldog momentum.

The Bulldogs came out of the timeout determined to take the lead. With 50 seconds left on the clock, Nevada Gill hit a three-point shot that sent the crowd to their feet and tied the game 33-33.

The fourth quarter started with Newell’s Kyla Emmery hitting from beyond the arc which was, in turn, answered by another three from Gill. With five minutes left to play, the Bulldogs were able to take the lead, 38-37, following an easy bunny by Sherri Negaard.

Newell, however, wasn’t ready to quit. Irrigator senior Dana Youngberg took matters into her own hands as she was able to continuously drive to the basket, draw the foul and knock down her free throws.

With 52 seconds left on the clock, Sundance found themselves down 38-42. While Negaard was able to find the basket to bring the Bulldogs within two, 40-42, another Bulldog foul sent the Irrigators to the line with 25 seconds left on the clock.

Down by three, Sundance had control of the ball for the final seconds of the game, and while they had a chance at the basket, the Irrigators were able to shut them down and take the victory 43-40.

The Lady Bulldogs were back in action last weekend as they took on the ever-tough teams of Wright and Big Horn.

Facing Wright on a frigid night, the Sundance Lady Bulldogs had a tough time warming up. Shooting just 28 percent for the night, the Bulldogs found themselves down 13-24 at halftime.

With a short spurt of energy in the third quarter, the Bulldogs trailed by 4 with one quarter to play. The Bulldogs were unable to maintain their momentum throughout the fourth quarter and fell to the Lady Panthers 34-45.

Sherry Negaard led the Bulldogs in scoring with 10 points on the night, followed by Madison Gill who added 8. Teddi Marchant led the Bulldogs in rebounding as she pulled down 11 for the night.

Squaring off against the Big Horn Rams on Saturday, the Sundance girls’ basketball team continued to fall just short. While the Bulldogs were able to stay within striking distance for three quarters, the Rams outscored the Bulldogs 10-2 in the fourth quarter for the 49-35 victory

Teddi Marchant led the Bulldogs in scoring putting in 10 points for the night followed by Madison Gill who added 9.
