Split results for Stateline Shootout

Bulldog Boys

The Sundance Bulldogs opened play at the Stateline Shootout on Thursday night against the Newcastle Dogies. Newcastle was off and running with the tipoff while Sundance was left to play catch up against this quick team.

As the first half wound down, the Bulldogs found themselves down, but not out. With a score of 22-41 to start the third quarter they were determined to close the gap.

Making a short run to start the 3rd the scrappy Dogies wouldn’t let the Bulldogs get too close before they called a time out to try and break the momentum. The third quarter would end with a score of 35-51 with the Bulldogs still chipping away.

The fourth quarter continued much like the previous three as Newcastle was able to hang on to their lead and put the Bulldogs away for good, ending the game with a score of 58-39.

Friday the Bulldogs travelled across state lines to compete against the Belle Fourche Broncs in game two of the Stateline Shootout. With a slow start to the game, the Bulldogs had 22 points in the first half.

With 33 in the second, the Bulldogs fell short again with a final score of 55-68.

“We played well against Belle,” said coach Nic Olson, “If we could have knocked down a couple of shots early I think it would have built our confidence a little bit for the rest of the game.”

Kye Taylor paced the Bulldogs in scoring this game as he was able to put up 20 points and pull down 7 rebounds.

The Bulldogs were on the road again Saturday as they faced off against Lead-Deadwood and were looking for a win. Coach Olson felt as though they had good timing with their passes and were able to hit their shooters in rhythm to knock down key shots.

With an even spread of scoring from the Bulldogs, they were able to do just that. As Landon Martin put in 18 points, followed by Taylor with 13 and Gill with 12, the Bulldogs were able to walk away with a 62-57 victory.

The Sundance Bulldogs will face off against the undefeated (5-0) Glenrock Herders in opening play of the Powder River Conference Tournament in Sundance at 1:30 on Friday.

Lady Bulldogs

The Sundance Lady Bulldogs opened the Stateline shootout facing off against the Newcastle Lady Dogies. Kicking off the first quarter with a slow start, both teams were looking to get into the groove and score some points but we’re coming up short on their shots and losing the ball instead.

While the Lady Bulldogs ended the first quarter with a small lead, the Dogies were on their tails into the second, outscoring the Bulldogs 13-5 and making the halftime score 15-20. Sherry Negaard helped to keep the Bulldogs close into the break, scoring 11 points in the first half, including two threes.

The Bulldogs had a solid second half of basketball as they came out strong, causing Newcastle to take a timeout with 5:57 left in the 3rd and the Bulldogs down by one, 19-20. Despite the timeout, Sundance continued to build on their momentum, holding Newcastle to only two points that quarter and taking the lead from the Lady Dogies with a quarter score of 29-22.

The Lady Bulldogs went into the fourth with the lead and determination to keep it. As the Lady Dogies started to chip away at the Lady Dawgs, Sundance decided to slow down the pace and start looking for a good shot.

This put the Lady Dogies in a tight spot, as they needed to foul to get the ball back. The Lady Dawgs were making some big shots down the stretch causing Newcastle to put on a full court press, but it was too little too late as the Lady Bulldogs walked away with a 38-31 victory.

Friday afternoon saw the Lady Bulldogs hitting the hardwood again as they travelled to South Dakota to face the Belle Fourche Lady Broncs. Facing a tough opponent, the Lady Bulldogs struggled on the floor, shooting only 27 percent on the night.

Madison Gill led Sundance in scoring with 13 points, but it wasn’t enough to put a ‘W’ in the column and the Lady Bulldogs fell to the Lady Broncs 23-67.

Following a tough loss to Belle Fourche, the Lady Bulldogs had to lace their shoes up again and face another tough team, in the Lead-Deadwood Lady Diggers. Lead-Deadwood held the Lady Bulldogs to only 14 points throughout the four quarters, handing them the third loss of the season.

The Lady Bulldogs will face the Glenrock Lady Herders on Friday at noon for the opening game of the Powder River Conference Tournament.
