  • If you build it, will they come?

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 24, 2020

Renting out space in the new Hulett Clinic is not as simple for the Crook County Medical Services District as picking the best rooms and packing up the stethoscopes. The Board of Trustees met on Friday to begin discussions over the lease, but were quickly stymied by a lack of concrete data. Representing the Crook County Hospital Foundation, which has spearheaded the project and will own the building, Sandi Kellogg asked whether the board is interesting in leasing space in the clinic, which is also expected to house a pharmacy and physical...

  • Star of Bethlehem returns to the skies

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 24, 2020

According to the Gospel of Matthew, wise men from the east were inspired to travel to Jerusalem by a bright star that appeared in the night sky. There, they asked King Herod: “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.” For the first time in 800 years, the Christmas star has appeared in the heavens once again – just in time to mark the birth of Jesus. Thanks to a couple of millennia of scientific discovery, however, experts now b...

The vestry thought to open for services during Advent and Christmas as that is such an important part of the church year; however, with the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, the vestry decided to continue to monitor the situation and stay closed for the time being. Currently they hope to be able to resume services after the first of the year, but that will also depend on the status of the outbreak – especially locally. In the m...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Dec 24, 2020

Dear Editor, Are we being bullied? I am grateful that our kids get to go to school in person and play sports and have noted how fortunate I am to live in a region of the country that hasn’t held its citizens hostage to such a degree as other areas of our country, but in this case I think we have a threat of being bullied. In a letter dated December 10, 2020, addressed to the fans but sent to parents, it was noted that in an effort to not affect the kids’ post-season play, the parents and community could be kept from attending sporting eve...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 24, 2020

As always, I like to take the opportunity at Christmas time to reflect on the good things in this world. It’s been a difficult year for all of us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some holiday cheer. First up, we have a nine-year-old from Essex in the UK, who understands that honesty is always the best policy. “I’ve tried hard to be good but miserably failed,” she said in her annual letter to Santa. “I’ll be honest, I do deserve a coal.” Nevertheless, the cheeky young thing felt she wo...

  • No proof, no payback

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 24, 2020

Without proof of what exactly happened, Crook County Medical Services District can’t legally pay back money it was given by the Crook County Hospital Foundation that was allegedly earmarked for use in Hulett. The exact details of the “loan” are unclear, but it appears the foundation gave funds to the district several years ago, when it was in a bad financial situation. The money may have been earmarked by donors for a clinic in Hulett and to have been a loan, rather than a donation. At last month’s regular meeting, Trustees Sandy Neiman...
