  • Winter whiteout

    Feb 27, 2020

A strong, low pressure system brought snow and gusty winds to the Black Hills on Monday. Several inches of snow continued to fall through the night and into Tuesday, while the roads became slippery and glazed with ice, all of which made travel tough around the area and led to a temporary closure on Hwy 585. The heaviest snow fell over the Black Hills and their foothills, while the wind gusts were expected to reach up to 45 mph in some parts of northeastern Wyoming. Schools were closed across...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 27, 2020

Caucus season is upon us and, for the Crook County Republican Party, choosing a candidate for president will be business as usual. For their Democratic counterparts, however, this election season will introduce a whole new system of casting your ballot. Democratic Caucus “Ranked choice voting is done in many different places all across the country,” says Randy Leinen, chairman of the Crook County Democratic Party. “It gives a person the opportunity to cast a meaningful ballot on numerous rounds.” The process begins with mail-in votes,...

  • State preparing, but coronavirus risk low

While the number of reported cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) continues to grow around the world, the current risk of an outbreak is still low in Wyoming, according to the Wyoming Department of Health (WDH). Dr. Alexia Harrist, state health officer and state epidemiologist with WDH, says, “We have seen no reported or suspected cases in our state so far and that’s why we are saying the risk to our state’s residents from this virus is still low. However, we also closely tracking COVID-19 and preparing as needed should the... Full story

  • Peek at the Past

    Feb 27, 2020

100 Years Ago The Times February 25, 1920 County Agent Oldroyd is to occupy the rooms in the court house made vacant by the removal of the land office. The county agent’s office is designed strictly non-political and is so conducted by Mr. Oldroyd, so it may be necessary to give the quarters a thorough fumigation and formaldehydin’ – if such tame treatment will kill the crouching democratic bugs no doubt lurking in the cracks and corners. Picture shows Friday and Saturday at the club hall is thought to be a safe announcement. And they are...

  • Our View: Trust must be earned, especially when broken

    Feb 27, 2020

Four years ago, it was standing room only in the courthouse when the hospital board discussed its management contract with Rapid City Regional Health (RCRH). It had been a topic of discussion for weeks across the county. There was deep concern about the future of our hospital and long term care. The public felt we’d been seeing progress, that things were more positive than they had been when RCRH arrived. The community came out in force to share their concerns. To this day, we don’t know why RCRH was dismissed. The decision was made in...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Feb 27, 2020

There’s a new trend in town – and it’s got me thinking that you guys might just be ready for the next level of your libation education. According to your friendly local coffee shop owner, one particular drink is experiencing a surge in popularity. I’m thrilled to report that a significant number of Sundance residents are now starting their day with a London Fog. She’s not sure why she suddenly can’t keep the ingredients in stock, but I maintain that you don’t need a reason to have...

  • Letters to the Editor

    Feb 27, 2020

Dear Editor, I fully agree with Verda Swenson’s letter to the editor in The Sundance Times Thurs., Feb. 13 edition. The road on Rupe Hill is a nightmare, not the best when road conditions are favorable. Then it becomes much worse with snow and ice on it. I have had a couple – three experiences on it; very scary. I can’t imagine driving it twice a day or more. Yes, it definitely should have guard rails and other precautions to make it as safe as possible, sanding and clearing snow when necessary. I have never talked with another person...

Tyler Lindholm, Representative, House District 1|Feb 27, 2020

Greetings House District 1! After a grueling past few days, we’re now entering into the third week of the 2020 Budget Session. This week, members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committee introduced their respective Budgets (House, HB 1, General Government Appropriations-2 and Senate, SF 1, General Government Appropriations) to their chambers. During second...

  • Person, place or thing?

    Feb 27, 2020

For My name shall be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts (Mal. 1:11). Life is filled with an overflowing amount of information to process and categorize. Out of survival and confusion we often discard what is good with the bad. This uncertainty can elevate things into places in our lives that don’t belong there. The obvious is lost in misunderstanding, simplicity is masked by the ensuing anxiety and that which is needed most is destroyed in pursuit of that which is unnecessary. Things often fill gaps in our lives with the wrong...

What are these side effects and are they in fact serious?” M. E. Dear M. E., Heartburn can be painful and difficult to have even once, but to people with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), heartburn can become a daily nightmare. GERD occurs when acid from the stomach works its way into the esophagus...

  • Interior secretary halts goat cull

Mike Koshmrl, Jackson Hole Daily Via Wyoming News Exchange|Feb 27, 2020

JACKSON — The U.S. Secretary of the Interior directly intervened in an aerial goat cull underway in the Tetons last Friday, ordering Grand Teton National Park Acting Superintendent Gopaul Noojibail to “stand down.” David Bernhardt, who presides over the National Park Service’s governmental parent, became involved in Teton Park’s affairs after his office received a sharply worded letter that Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon sent to Noojibail the same day. The governor said he was “profoundly disappointed” that the park was “unilaterally...
