The Sundance Winter Festival will be coming back to Main Street after all – a change of plans that prompted a positive reaction from the city council last week. “I can’t tell you how happy that would make me,” commented Mayor Paul Brooks on hearing the news from Tony Barton, who is volunteering as organizer through the Sundance Chamber of Commerce. The City of Sundance has opted to seek a new municipal judge rather than continue to wait for the Wyoming Supreme Court to approve its request for ordinance citations to be handled in Circuit Court. Meanwhile, at the suggestion of Sheriff Jeff Hodge, the Crook County Sheriff’s Office will likely start enforcing a select number of city ordinances. The board of trustees for Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD) has officially moved to replace its electronic medical records system (EMR), which has been causing serious issues with cash flow and is deeply unpopular with staff. The board met in special session on Friday to discuss the potential contract. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in the process of changing its rules on lead and copper in public drinking water systems. Within the next couple of years, according to Public Works Director Mac Erickson, this is likely to have a significant impact on the City of Sundance. The first step in the process, according to Erickson, will be a requirement for the city to create a complete inventory of every service line within its water system by 2026. Sundance's fourth graders convened on the Bearlodge Ranger District office on Thursday to hang the Christmas decorations they had made the day before for the tree that takes pride of place in the lobby. Roy "Dutch" Hoyer, 86, of Glenrock, Wyoming, passed peacefully in his sleep on December 11, 2022, at Banner Medical Center in Casper. Dutch was born on January 31, 1936, in Sundance, Wyoming, to George and Betty Hoyer. He attended Sundance Elementary and Sundance High School until the eighth grade before striking out to pursue an incredible life of self-learning and experiences. 1 Years Ago December 14, 1922 George Holden announces a fare well reception party at their ranch on Pine Ridge next Saturday evening. Dancing and refreshments, to which all are invited. Miss Dain Holden is soon to leave for a course in college. The cold snap reached bottom last Friday morning at 11 degrees below zero. This was supposed to end the winter period for a time and Sunday was pleasant as a basket of chips. But Monday started out at 6 below again, so there you are. The commissioners have heard their first request for an exemption to the county’s new rules for subdivisions over 35 acres in size. However, due to the need for more information, a decision has been tabled until January. According to the new rules, which come into effect this month, there is a list of exemptions that can be requested by an applicant. Due to an impending winter storm, staff began closing seasonal gates and recreation sites that are not open through the winter on the Black Hills National Forest, Mon., Dec. 12, ahead of the regularly scheduled Dec. 15 date. Gates are closed to provide a seasonal refuge for wildlife, protect road and trail surfaces and other resources, and provide for public safety as some of the roads are converted into part of the snowmobile trail system. At an annual conference in Casper last month, the University of Wyoming Extension recognized educators across the state for outstanding service in 2022. For her efforts to extend the 4-H experience to district students who might not otherwise have access to livestock events, Crook County educator Sara Fleenor earned the Diversity Enhancement Recognition Award. The Bureau of Land Management Newcastle Field Office has announced plans to burn slash piles this winter on BLM-administered lands in Crook and Weston counties. Burning may continue as conditions permit through April 2023. In Crook County, BLM will burn approximately 700 acres of slash piles in the Moore Canyon, Proctor, Jackpot, and Goldie Divide project areas. Girls at Upton The winter sports seasons got underway this past weekend as the Sundance basketball teams participated in the Bobcat Invitational in Upton.
