  • Council approves six percent utility increase

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 12, 2019

The Sundance City Council has approved a six percent increase on utility rates that will become effective at the beginning of next year. The increase was deemed necessary partly to ensure the city’s enterprise accounts are paying for themselves and partly due to the loss of income the city expects from sales tax over the next year because the current iteration of the sixth cent tax has run its course. It’s “hard to compensate” for the loss of the sixth cent, said Clerk Treasurer Kathy Lenz. The budget does not contain much fluff and, when it co...

  • Progress slow for city projects

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 12, 2019

At Tuesday’s regular meeting, the Sundance City Council was unable to consider a report on the “nuisance” property it has been dealing with on Sewell Street. The council had decided to commission a report on the condition and worth of the property before making a decision on potential demolition, but the building inspector was unable to travel the Saturday he was scheduled due to the snowstorm. The report will be ready for January’s meeting, said Mayor Paul Brooks. Meanwhile, City Attorney Mark Hughes shared concern over the wording of the 201...

  • County water study well underway

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 12, 2019

The county’s year-long study to find a solution for water issues in the area around Carlile is now well underway, the county commissioners heard last week. Landowner surveys have been sent out and collected and well sampling has taken place across the study area. According to Jaime Tarver, Senior Project Manager, one of the most important next steps for the study will be to identify “champions” among the landowners who are interested in pushing forward with the ideas that may come out of it. The study, under the direct supervision of Wyomi...

  • Commission opts out of "nuisance" decision

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 12, 2019

The county commissioners heard public comment on an alleged shooting nuisance in the Sundance Canyon Ranch subdivision on Tuesday. Attendees were invited to share their thoughts during a hearing that had been postponed from November to make sure all interested parties had received notice of the complaint. Ultimately, the commission determined that the subdivision’s own improvement and service district would be a more appropriate avenue through which to find a solution. The landowner who brought the issue to the county once again presented t...

Among the many festive events that took place around Sundance this weekend, the Bearlodge Bakery & Greenhouse hosted a cookie decorating event for younger members of the community and their families. Little ones were invited to enjoy baked goods under the watchful eye of Santa Claus, who waited patiently in the corner for his young wards to finish their creative activities and head on over for a Christmas photograph (and, of course, to make sure Santa knows exactly what he should bring them...

  • Burning down the house

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 12, 2019

Fire Chief Gari Gill brought a proposal before the Sundance City Council last week: the new owners of the building that has served in recent memory as a daycare and food pantry would like the fire department to burn it down. Demolishing the building will be expensive, he explained, so the owners have suggested using a controlled burn as a training exercise. Mayor Paul Brooks initially balked at the idea, recalling an incident back in the days when the fire department regularly undertook such...

  • Getting out of the ambulance business

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 12, 2019

With the Sundance City Council wanting to get out of the ambulance business and the Crook County Medical Services District (CCMSD) having found a way to take on the responsibility itself, all that remained when the two sides met on Tuesday was for each to inform the other of its stance. All parties appeared to walk away from the meeting feeling that an amicable agreement had been reached. CCMSD CEO Nathan Hough began the conversation by thanking the city for allowing the district to make use of its ambulances until now. “Moving forward, w...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 12, 2019

This is not the most wonderful time of year after all, but only if you’re a small dog with anxiety issues. When everything from paper plates to the opening of a can of tomatoes turns you into a quivering mess, it’s no wonder that the surprises of Christmas can sometimes be too much. The small dog in question is, of course, my beloved rescue pup. Midge, who has starred in more than one column already this year because she’s a source of constant entertainment, spent the first few months of her l...

Margaret Austin, Wyoming Tribune Eagle Via Wyoming News Exchange|Dec 12, 2019

CHEYENNE — According to the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, coal workers in Wyoming need more protections when it comes to bankruptcy filings in the industry. Representatives from the department presented their “wish list” of changes Monday to the Legislature’s Select Committee on Coal/Mineral Bankruptcies, which was formed in September after a string of coal bankruptcies in the state shook Wyoming workers. After hearing reasoning from Kelly Roseberry, a lawyer with Workforce Services, the committee directed the Legislative Service Of...

  • Homeowners try to lease mineral lands beneath home

Joy Ufford, Sublette Examiner Via Wyoming News Exchange|Dec 12, 2019

PINEDALE — After two harrowing rounds of state lease auctions that invited bids for the mineral estates under their home beside the New Fork River, a local couple is applying for the 240-acre lease in the state’s “over the counter” option. Applying for an unsold Office of State Lands and Investments’ lease “over the counter” falls in a time period after two unsuccessful auctions. Homeowners Jan Allen and Mike McFarland, who live next to the New Fork River, took this route after a July lease sale and another in November brought no bidders for P...

  • During budget presentation, Gordon says he's willing to look at lodging tax

Nick Reynolds, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Dec 12, 2019

CASPER — Gov. Mark Gordon told lawmakers Monday that he would be “willing” to consider a statewide lodging tax if it came across his desk this winter. However, in his first budget presentation to members of the Joint Appropriations Committee this week, Gordon declined to entertain any other tax legislation, instead focusing his first hearing on cost-savings as the state faces a future of declining revenues. Kicking off the first of several weeks of budget hearings, Gordon seemed largely on the same page as leaders of the budget-making commi...

  • Educators criticize release of salary info

Seth Klamann and Nick Reynolds, Casper Star-Tribune Via Wyoming News Exchange|Dec 12, 2019

CASPER — The names and salaries of every school district employee in Wyoming will be released this month after a request from a state senator, a move that’s drawn criticism from educators across the state. “There is a big gap between what I’m legally bound to do and what is the right thing to do,” said State Superintendent Jillian Balow. “And I have difficulty figuring out and reconciling how the release of names that intrudes on the privacy of citizens in our Wyoming community, that potentially puts their security, safety and other aspec...
