  • Santa comes to town

    Dec 8, 2022

Santa arrived on Friday in a dazzle of lights and music. Waving to the crowds during the light parade, he seemed unperturbed by the presence of the green guy - perhaps because he'd already been apprehended by the Crook County Sheriff's Department before he could steal any Christmas. This year's winners were Powder River Energy in the business category, with a lighted tree atop their electric vehicle, and the Bearlodge FFA's horse-drawn carriage. See page 12 for more....

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 8, 2022

When Cindi and Brandon Baudhuin asked for help to create a unique hunting experience for a 13-year-old boy who is battling a form of bone and soft tissue cancer, a group of local outdoorsmen did not hesitate to answer the call. As it turned out, fate was also listening in. Thanks to a series of coincidences, the passionate young hunter was able to take his first lion right here in Crook County. Oconto River Kids The Baudhuins volunteer with Oconto River Kids, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit with...

  • Peek at the Past

    Dec 8, 2022

1 Years Ago December 7, 1922 The Legion dance Thursday night was successful beyond expectation and will be remembered as a novel and most pleasant affair. The spirit of ’49 prevailed, with accompanying features of a busy barkeeper, roulette, twenty one and fan tan, all of which attracted a good patronage. During the evening the bar suffered a desperate holdup, the bad men getting away with several suspicious looking bottles. Wilber Goodson returned Saturday from shipping stock to Omaha, after which he spent some time in Cheyenne looking into...

  • CCSD audit gives clean bill of health

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 8, 2022

A clean bill of health for Crook County School District’s finances this year was marred only by a single flagged item that turns up regularly in audit reports penned for small governmental entities. Leo Riley & Co. found just one deficiency within the district’s accounting, involving the separation of duties. This is a problem that has often appeared over the years on audits performed for Crook County’s towns, boards and the county. “Separation of duties requires that someone other than the employee responsible for safeguarding the asset m...

Dear NP, My primary care provider has offered me the bivalent COVID booster. Should I get it if I have already had COVID and multiple COVID vaccines? Are there any different side effects than the original COVID booster? Does it work well? Dear Reader, We’d all hoped that COVID-19 infections would be a thing of the past by now, but the reality is that infections continue to occur. Older adults are at the highest risk of getting very sick from COVID-19, and there is a higher risk of death for t...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 8, 2022

Nestled on the western border of Dorset is a place I’ve only just discovered. Somehow, I’ve gone decades without realizing that a town of almost 5000 people – with all the associated amenities – exists just a short drive from my own home town. Obviously this came as a surprise and caused some deep reflection on my observation skills, but then it turned out that Poundbury’s skill at playing hide-and-seek is not the most interesting thing about it. The more I delved into its history, the more...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Dec 8, 2022

Wyoming Game & Fish (WGF) has announced that the watercraft check station at Coulter Bay has been closed for the season to allow recreationists to enjoy Keyhole Reservoir for its more winter-based activity: ice fishing. Regulations came into effect a couple of months ago to protect Keyhole Reservoir from the growing threat of invasive zebra mussels, which had been documented at Pactola Reservoir in South Dakota in July. This was considered concerning as it was the first time zebra mussels had...
