  • Kuhl resigns

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 14, 2021

A civil trial that was to consider the removal of Mary Kuhl from her position as Crook County Treasurer will no longer be necessary because her letter of resignation was accepted by the county commissioners on Friday. The trial was set to begin on Tuesday but the petition for her removal, filed by the Wyoming Attorney General’s Office (AG), has now been dismissed with prejudice, a term that means it cannot be brought back to court in the future. This was done as part of the settlement agreement in which Kuhl agreed to resign her office....

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 14, 2021

Rare Element Resources (RER) has finally received the $21.9 million funding promised by the U.S. Department of Energy. The company announced last week that its next goal is to construct a demonstration plant in Upton that will process and separate rare earth elements from ore that was previously stockpiled at the Bear Lodge Project in Crook County. “The award represents approximately 50% of the total estimated project costs. Securing the remainder of the funds is the responsibility of Rare Element Resources,” says George Byers, RER. To...

  • Ongoing topics occupy council

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 14, 2021

Two topics are still generating interest for the Sundance City Council: a proposed change to the noon siren and the implication of the recent U.S. Census that the city has lost around 150 citizens over the last ten years. The first came up during Sheriff Jeff Hodge’s monthly report at last Tuesday’s regular meeting. He clarified that, while he has been hearing from the community on this topic, it is actually within the purview of Emergency Management. “The siren has probably generated the most comments that we’ve had in a long, long...

  • Council asked for exceptions to zoning code

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 14, 2021

Should the city grant variances on its zoning code for specific requests from citizens? The Sundance City Council had three opportunities to consider this question at last week’s meeting, and the answer was different for each unique circumstance. Mayor Paul Brooks opened a public hearing for a zoning change with a little history on how the zoning code came to be. Years ago, he said, there was no zoning at all in Sundance and the city was a “hodge podge” of different types of property. The council went through a lot of effort to get it...

  • Oneok reclamation efforts continue

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 14, 2021

Addressing concern from local landowners whose property now houses part of the Elk Creek Pipeline, representatives from Oneok last week spoke with the county commissioners to explain that the restoration project is far from complete. The aim, they said, is to restore the properties to exactly how they appeared before the pipeline was installed, leaving the landowners whole. However, the weather this year has been “incredibly challenging” for new grass. The land was seeded in the fall of 2020 and, so far this year, the contractor has...

  • Revitalization meetings delayed

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 14, 2021

The meetings, tours and opportunities for public comment that were expected to take place this week as part of the Revitalization Roadmap and Development program have been postponed until the middle of November. At that time, says Andy Miller of the Sundance Chamber of Commerce, the week is expected to follow the original schedule. The postponement is due to COVID-19 in the Downtown Redevelopment office, which means Ben Levenger is obliged to delay his engagements for the time being. The Revitalization Roadmap program is funded through a...

  • Oil company asks for tax relief

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 14, 2021

A local oil company approached the county commissioners last week to ask for relief on the interest associated with their tax bills for the last three years. Understanding the difficulties companies like Ranch Oil have faced due to prices over the last half decade and additional difficulties such as the pandemic, the commissioners agreed to waive $40,195.79 for interest on taxes between the years of 2018 through 2020. Jennifer McDowell, attorney for Ranch Oil, presented the request on behalf of Carl Dean, co-owner, and Tonie Cook, land...

  • Don't push Medicaid expansion on Wyoming

    Ogden Driskill, State Senator|Oct 14, 2021

Every session for the past several years, the Wyoming legislature has endured one push after another for Obamacare Medicaid expansion. For my part, I have held steady against expansion in every debate. My position has brought no end of criticism from the media, certain special interests and many of my less conservative legislative colleagues. Fortunately, a majority of senators have had the courage to stand up against those special interests that are pushing Medicaid expansion on Wyoming. It...

    Oct 14, 2021

Following an unusually quiet 2020-21 flu season, a Wyoming Department of Health (WDH) official says the need for flu shots remains important to help protect Wyoming residents from influenza as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. “As the next flu season begins, we know flu shots remain the first and most important step in influenza protection,” said Dr. Alexia Harrist, state health officer and state epidemiologist with WDH. “Flu vaccines are safe and reduce illness, hospitalizations and deaths. Everyone six months of age and older should...

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 14, 2021

A wind developer is looking at the Black Hills National Forest as a possible location for a wind farm that would be large enough to supply the City of Chicago. The project is in its early exploratory phase and where exactly the towers would be placed will depend to a large degree on how the nearby communities feel, according Scott Debenham of Debenham Energy. A wind developer since 2001, Debenham visited the county commissioners to ask for a letter of support as he begins the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process, for which he was...
