The sunshine made a welcome return to bring an added level of cheer to this year’s Homecoming Parade, a noisy affair filled with excited kids, merry adults and athletes celebrating successes past and future. Proclaiming their intentions with loud voice and colorful signs, the Bulldogs let the crowd know exactly what they had planned for their opponents over Homecoming weekend, when the football, volleyball and cross country teams went up against their counterparts from Newcastle, Wright and...

  • Fiber installation impacts city water system

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 10, 2019

The City of Sundance is dealing with an unexpected consequence of the switchover to fiber internet: the loss of the old copper wire could impact the functionality of the SCADA monitoring system that controls the water tanks which feed the town. “Range Telephone did fiber-to-the-home in Sundance, the problem being that up until now we’ve always had our water systems controlled by off-on switches,” said Mayor Paul Brooks last week. “Mac [Erickson, Public Works Director] and I have been in quite a little conversation with these folks...

  • Shipping containers bring council to an impasse

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 10, 2019

A request that seemed like business as usual proved too knotty to unpick at last week’s meeting of the Sundance City Council. The question of whether or not to grant Council Member Joe Wilson a variance to temporarily site a shipping container on residential property evolved into a discussion of fairness, precedence and correct procedure. Because the agenda item concerned a variance requested by Wilson, Mayor Paul Brooks asked him to vacate the chair and present his case at the podium. “We are getting ready to have an auction to sell all...

Around 3 p.m., Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to the area for a one-vehicle rollover.  A 1995 Ford Ranger was traveling eastbound on Interstate 90; for unknown reasons, the Ford exited the left side of the roadway before being over-corrected to the right and overturning. The driver of the Ford was identified as Pickerd, a 60-year-old Sundance resident.  Pickerd was not wearing...

  • This Week at Your Library

    Oct 10, 2019

The library will be closed on Monday, October 14, for Columbus Day. Falls are the leading cause of death in older adults. Here are some things you can do to help decrease your chance of falls: 1. Wear cotton socks or socks with rubber grippers on the bottom or wear shoes when indoors. 2. Avoid wearing flip-flops; these types of shoes are considered “trip hazards”. 3. Don’t step on wet surfaces, no matter how safe it looks. Put a towel down or, if possible, bypass the area entirely until it is completely dry. Library Programming: TODDLER...

These bids will be opened on October 24, Lenz said, so that the council can approve one at their regular November meeting. This will kick start the design portion of the project, she said. • City to revise garbage ordinance

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 10, 2019

At the request of City Attorney Mark Hughes, Sundance will be taking a look at its current ordinance for garbage. Adopted in 1973, Hughes commented that it’s a “pretty old ordinance” with antiquated language and a few gaps where modern needs are not addressed. Most importantly, said Hughes, it does not have a provision that requires all household waste to be bagged, which is something CW Waste would like to see added and would prevent littering. Mayor Paul Brooks agreed that it might well be time for an update, pointing out that, as an...

  • This Side of the Pond

    Sarah Pridgeon|Oct 10, 2019

I was for some reason discouraged from clambering on the bouncy castle at the Pumpkin Patch festival this weekend, and I was apparently “too old” for the pony rides. Even so, I had a lovely time perusing squash and watching a clever man make shapes out of stretchy balloons. I’ve always enjoyed the fall, even before I was introduced to the idea of pumpkin spice. The temperatures are cool enough to enjoy the outdoors (I can’t help it, I’m still a delicate Brit when it comes to sun), the...
